Picking cabbages.
« on: October 26, 2015, 09:24 »
I picked my first savoy cabbage yesterday for sunday lunch.  This is the first time I have grown cabbages.  I think I might have picked it too early though, as although the outer leaves were a nice, dark green, the inner leaves where very white and pale. Have I picked it a bit early and should leave the rest to ripen?  How do you know when they are ready?

Attached is a pic (with some of the other constituents of sunday lunch!!  :)) showing what it looked like when I picked it. It tasted nice, but reckon it could be better!

They're ready when they're big enough to eat.

The inner leaves are much lighter than the outside ones, and yours sounds quite normal!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's good to know. The innards were a bit bitter though, so wasn't sure if they would sweeten up with some more growth.  A big knob of butter soon sorted it out though!

Minimal water to cook them in as well!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
