Seed Potatoes
« on: June 24, 2009, 19:57 »
Am I looking too early?

I can not find any seed potatoes for my Christmas Spuds!  Wilkos had their first earlies in waaay too early, so I thought they would do the same with Christmas tatties.

T&M are out of stock of everything, even all my little family run sites have nothing.

You won't find them in Wilco, they are a specialist seed spud.

Google "Christmas seed potatoes"

Here's one result.

There are others including one, shall ew say, well known to this site, but I didn't want to be accused of advertising!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You won't find any of these cheap. Sutton's are £8.95 plus post for just 2 kg of seed.

Suttons do 3 different types as already posted, plus a 'refill your tubs pack' of 5 x 3 different sorts @ £6.95. But still £3.95 postage :(

Not really fussed about the price, as long as I can get some for my Christmas spuds.

I am having no luck with anything but sweetcorn at the moment, I keep losing cabbages, caulis, no onions or carrots either.

But I seem to be capable of growing spuds hehehee.

Maris Peer nice for Christmas?

I ordered some Carlingford from Suttons website early last week and they said early july for delivery, which gives me some time to clear a bit of space for them!

This year I won't be caught out by thinking they've got blight just 'cos the leaves are drying up; it's just the haulms dying off and I won't plant them too late either; ended up with lots of marbel sized spuds for Christmas ::)

I'm glad I'm into year 3 now... I feel as though I've learned some hard but rewarding lessons!

The answer depends on the variety and type of spud.

First earlies are planted 12" apart, with 24" between each row.
Second earlies and maincrop are 15" apart, with 28" between each row.

In a 2.5kg bag of Wilja I got about 25-30 seed tubers, but it can be more or less than that depending on the variety and therefore the size of the seed tuber.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
