Seed Potatoes - suggestions please?
« on: January 15, 2009, 13:03 »
Hello all
I'm back with more questions  :D

I'm needing advice please on good cropping tatties for the year ahead.

When should they go in? (Live in Kent - reasonably mild weather)
What seed supplier?
What varieties are best?(need both earlies and main crop advice)

We like Vivaldi (bought from shops recently) and I also love nice floury spuds for Jackets later.

I have absolutely no knowledge of growing spuds at all - except that I LUV them

Had some small success last year from planting bag of spuds from supermarket that had gone to seed but would like to do it properly this year.

Thanks for any advice.

Ours are coming from here;

 http://www.tuckers-seeds.co.uk/

Our favourite pots are Pink Fir Apple and we are growing those again this year along with Charlotte(2nd early) and Valor(early maincrop).
Once upon a time I could control myself

Thanks for that - have requested a catalogue.

Looks like the Charlotte have already sold out from this supplier - must be popular!

tuckers have a decent range and i think are a little less expensive than most of the other mail order options.

as an alternative, i've been in two wyvale garden centres recently and noticed they have a decent range of options atm. They might work out cheaper than going postal, i dunno.

Pink Fir Apples are the favourite i've grown. I really liked Roosters (baked) from the supermarket, so am trying them this year, too.

Posted this before, but in case you've missed it.....

My local nursery charge £1.10 per kilo, do them postal and you can buy them by weight or numbers of seed spuds.......

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There's also been quite a few posts recently about seed spuds - have a browse through the GYO forum to see what else people have written  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I had Carlingford for my Christmas new potatoes, but where these are ok for planting as early/maincrop, I don't know. But they taste fantastic!
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

They are classed as second early. Can be used as salad spuds or left to grow for bakers. (Per "Taterbase").

The site doesn't seem to support Safari either. I'll look it up on the PC.

Not forgetting with the postage costs you will save money going to any garden centre, haven't been recently but I know my independant garden centre has them in at £1.25 a kilo.  The big garden centres will probably sell packed in a bag correct me if I am wrong but they are about £3.99 per 2.5 kilos I think.

Got a great crop from my charlottes, bizzarely the independant garden centre called them main crop, I would say second earlies.  But they get bigger if can leave them in a while, risking blight though.
