Title: Seed suggestions
Post by: Paulj on June 09, 2013, 21:08
I just completely re-cleared my plot.  I'd been away to China for nearly two weeks and returned to my weed covered plot.  I couldn't tell if there were seedlings or not and it would have been too time consuming to work out in some cases, so I have just hoed the whole thing off!

I have some seeds left over from last year and have potted those up this evening, whilst the sun works its magic on the weed seedlings.  Hopefully I'll get some new veg seedlings appearing soon and be abe to plant those out.

In case they don't germinate for any reason, and because I don't really want to cheat by buying from the shops, are there ay seeds I would still be able to buy to get in the ground in time to produce some good veg?

I caught a bit of gardeners question time the other day and they said something about it not being too late for first early varieties where applicable.

I'm most interested in:

To be fair I hadn't yet planted the butternut squash or courgettes, so have seeds ready to go later this week once the weeds have died.

Carrots can  be sown a couple more times. I've still got 2 rows to plant.
Beans - definitely - sow direct in the ground - mine are just coming up after less than a week.
Lots of peeps are still just sowing squash and courgette so give it a go.
Peas - I find don't like summer much but you can try.
One of my plot neighbours has only just sown sweetcorn and they are up within the week (I've been watering them ;) )
PSB would probably do better than calabrese now - there is one designed for later sowing/planting.
Parsnips - probably wouldn't get very big by now.

My sweetcorn or second batch has just gone into pots after chitting in a week.

I have squash still not far on from seed leaf stage. And peas that are crying to go out but they are still in modules waiting for the lettuce to be evicted.

Runners and french beans have only been up a week so you will be okay putting those in direct.

Carrots have just sent up seed leaves and beetroot another batch or five went in today.

These are all second or third batches so worth having a go.
