Thanks for all your advice. 

Hubby is going over to look at some chickens today and order our four and is going to talk to him about food at the same time.   

I am going to order the feeders and water things off ebay tonight.

Bedding won't be a problem then - we have horses so the chickens can just have some of their bedding.

Am getting very excited now - I have been looking forward to getting chickens for about a year now but we have only just gotten around to sorting it out.

Diatom is a brand name (diatomaceous earth or DE google it).  It's useful mixed into a water or dilute disinfectant base to paint on perches, makes them easy to scrape droppings off and discourages red mite.

It's not really debih   It might look that way at first, but once you get started it's (mostly) a doddle... honest!
