I think it could be the environmental health department who deal with such matters :)

Hi everyone, im new here, sorry to but in, but i live in a council house and i have enquired to keep chickens. I havent had a reply yet, but have been told by a council official, that keeping chicken causes rats and that neighbours usually complain.
Apparently it has happened so many times that they now refuse most applications.Fingers crossed, we may be an exception?

Hi Aunt Sally
So do you get rats because you have chickens? Maybe if i could present the council with a reasonable argument and ensure them that i will do everything in my powers to keep rats at bay, i may have a chance.
How do you keep them away?
Thanks

If you follow basic rules of chicken keeping there is no reason to get rats  :!:

Keep all feed in rat proof containers - metal is best.

Clear up any spilt feed.

Do not leave feed out overnight.

Make sure their coop is rat proof - particularly raised off the ground.

I'm sure other chook keepers here may have some other tips for you  :D

No connection other than poor husbandry.

Far more likely to encourage vermin with poorly managed compost heaps :x
