Comfrey question
« on: March 07, 2009, 18:45 »
I shall be receiving some Comfrey root cuttings soon.  Firstly, what do I do with them when I get them.  Should I start them off in pots?

Secondly, when making comfrey tea, do you need to dilute this liquid before using it to feed the plants?

Sorry if these are daft or already answered questions.  New to the magic of comfrey

  Hi,
I had some roots sections last year around this time of year. I put them in pots until they started to get new growth and a few leaves and then planted them in the ground. I think they'd grow anyway but i wanted to be sure I didn't go forgetting where I'd planted them and weeding them out!

I stuff the leaves into big milk cartons, fill with water , put the lid on and leave to rot down. I think it should be diluted 1:10 but I suppose it depends how strong it is....
I just add a good glug to the watering can and fill with water.
   Nose peg highly recommended though.

That's great.  Thanks very much.  I've heard its stinky.  Nevermind perhaps it will keep pests away (and not all of the insect kind haha).

I'm on my second try to get the seeds to grow, still no joy, yet they do fine in the wild. Any suggestions?

Use root cuttings.
I think a spreading comfrey patch in the wild is more from roots than seed.

May I just ask while on the topic of comfrey, does comfrey tea have a 'lifespan'?
I made a batch last summer which is still stewing in a sealed tub up the garden, never been opened. Will it be no good now?
(am dreading taking the lid off, either way )

Comfrey is a weed.  If you don't believe me, come to our allotment, we have loads of it growing.  I dug loads out of my plot last year.  It just grows wild around here.

Its also great for swelling after an injury sprain.  You first soak it in very hot water, then put it on a bandage and wrap it around the area, eg, sprained ankle, etc.  The only problem is that when it dries, its really itchy.
