Overgrown fennel
« on: May 28, 2020, 19:03 »
Hi I have just gotten an allotment and there is a fennel 'bush' that has had nothing done to it for a year and half to two years, I am getting mixed advice as to whether to leave it alone til winter and then cut it back to others saying cut it back now to being told to dig it up and plant a fresh cutting, any advice please as am confused how, thanks

In what way is the fennel 'overgrown' It does grow to  5-6ft every year and dies back to nothing in winter, so it sounds like it is doing its normal thing.
If you dig it up and grow another, starting again from seed, it will quickly just end up the same size as the one you have.
Only you can say if you still want to keep it, if it's a bigger plant than you are happy with.

Ooops, forgot to say - welcome to the forum :)

Hi thanks for the reply, I have no idea how old this is as only had the allotment for 12 weeks and I know it hasn't been touched for 1 1/2 to 2 years so don't know if there is anything we can utilise off the plant or we are best to either cut it back or dig it up as we do have a fennel starting off in the greenhouse at the mo.
Can't add a photo as it's telling me it's too large.
