Anyone use those seed popper things?
« on: February 05, 2012, 13:16 »

Do anyone on here use one of those seed 'popper' thingys?

They're supposed to help with the weeny small seeds etc, to stop you sowing more than needed per pot / tray / module etc, so it cuts down on waste etc.

Worth it to get one or not??.....

I cannot envisage what you are trying to describe,  however,

if you want to plant single seeds, I get a piece of tubing (about the same diameter as a biro), and insert a piece of tubing as small as I can aquire into the end taking up any difference in diameters with sellotape.   I suck up the single seed and keeping the seed on the end of the tubing by sucking in I move to where I want the seed and release the suction, hopefully the seeds fall where required.   Don't blow, as the moisture in your breath will skick the next seed you lift to the tubing.   Always here to help.    The bug collectors use this idea to collect creepy crawlies.      Cheers,     Tony.

Are you talking about one of those things that look like a syringe ? You put the seeds in the top press the plunger and a plastic needle comes out with 1 seed in a slot ?

I have one never really got on with it that well.

I bought a thumb-operated one not so long ago and it was rubbish for tiny seeds (onion), haven't tried it on larger ones yet but it was only a cheap one. Maybe you get what you pay for?  :(

Yeah there the ones. Looks like a syringe crossed with one of those sweetner dispensers.

Any idea which one to go for and which to avoid?

I've got a round one, with a little chute attached. It's a bit like one of the puzzles you had when you were a kid, with the little metal balls in it  :)  I got it free from Wilko.  It's ok actually, especially for very light seeds that blow all over the place (never sow seeds in a gale  :D)  or for expensive seed that you don't want to have rush out into one big dollop  :)

I bought one last weekend after a sowing whole packets of seeds in a very small areas last year  ::)

I have tried it at home and it seems to work well, I sow my smaller crops in smaller raised beds, so I am hoping it will work out OK - it only cost £2.99 so I thought it would be worth a try.

The deeper you push the plunger, the more seeds come out - it's quite hard to only sow one at a time, could take more time than it's worth, especially with a large sowing - I've attached a couple of pics showing the 'device' and the spiked end which has a groove in it which is how the seeds are dispensed.

Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.

I was wondering if an old sweetener dispenser would do the job.
