how many hens do i have room for

hi im getting a shed 6 foot by 4 foot wide ,6,6 high and adding nestboxs and roost space ,how many is this suitable for i hope to be putting pekins -silkies in here.im not looking to fit as many as poss im thinking 6
they will have the run of my large garden during the day

DEFRA guidelines are a minimum of 1 foot square for accommodation per bird and 1 metre square for run space. However more space the better. I would recommend 3 Sq. Ft. per bird for the coop. Assuming you loose 6 Sq. Ft for the nest boxes that leaves 18 Sq. Ft. so just right for 6 birds. Smaller breeds can manage with a little less space and a little more for larger breeds.
