Incinerator ?
« on: June 18, 2007, 09:57 »
Any idea if I can use an incinerator on my new allotment please?

There is a enormous blackberry bush at the end of my plot and I have cut it back quite a bit. So I end up with loads of dead branches and could do with burning them.

Nothing is said about it on my contract and I just remember vaguely the woman from the council saying "no bonfire but some do have barbecues".  Surely if barbecues are allowed, incinerators are OK?

Thanks

I'd say they'd classify an incinerator like a bonfire. BBQ briqettes are usually completely smokeless, and they don't smell a lot, or make smuts. When burning garden twigs, for example,
the problem is the smoke generated (which will happen if they have any moisture content at all), and the smell. The site where I am has 3 days per year where we can burn garden rubbish, and I think this is at least partly down to rules imposed by the council on behalf of neighbouring residents.

I'm certain, though, that what makes a bonfire a bonfire is the burning of garden refuse, so, yeah, an incinerator would be classed as a bonfire.

Just a little update :

I have since rung the woman in charge of allotments and she didn't ban me from using one but gave me loads of recommendations about using it, like doing it in the evening, when it is not windy so that the smoke doesn't go towards the houses or over the road etc... but she insisted that just putting the branches in the skip at the other end of the site would be the best option...

So there you go, skip it is then!  I will be the proud owner of a brand new wheelbarrow tomorrow   (50% off at wilko's by the way !!!)
