New apple tree for free
« on: January 22, 2008, 12:35 »
About three months ago sent off three bottle tops and a Tesco receipt to the fruit juice people Copella, and our free apple tree arrived this morning! It's called Jonagold and is about 4' 6" tall.

Wow!
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

Have you any other apples, Scribbler, because it is a triploid, I think, if that's the case you need two others for good pollination.

Don't understand about the pollination bit

Does this mean I won't be getting any apples?

     Scibbler.

Couldn't answer for laughing.

You def need another non-triploid to get any meaningful fruit. The third is only required if you want the second tree to fruit, too, as this one won't be a good pollinator. But you could try getting away with a self-fertile, to start with if any would be listed as a good pollinator for it.

Don't forget scribbler any crab apples growing nearby will be a good pollinator. Where are you planting it ? most allotment sites will have apple trees knocking about.

Ask the Mrs.

What with this and the Woollies grape vine. I'm sure she'll provide some input...

Fortunately it is group D and there are loads of apples in group C and D which can pollinate it.

Hopefully near by there will be a crab apple tree and you will be ok.

  Typical!   I bought a trio of trees earlier this year, Jonagold, Braeburn and Conference pear that were on offer for £14.99 + P&P

I didn't know much about them needing other trees in order to pollenate and didn't know where to find out.

That link is great - now I know what to look out for, but might not have the room to fit in more trees!

As it happens (not that it matters 'cos I'm obviously not going to get any fruit   ) the Jonagold has produced leaves and some flower buds already - if there's a sudden cold snap as is predicted for the North will the tree die becuase it's putting it's energy into leaves and fruiting too early?

You should get fruit from the Jonagold.  The braeburn will pollinate it.

The problem is that the Jonagold will not return the favour.
Hopefully there will be an apple tree nearby that can pollinate it.  If not or if you want to be really sure how about a ballerina tree - they do not take much space.

The Conference pear should be OK, I'm not sure Brauburn is good partner, but something will happen, if not, a little tree full of pollen at the right time might be a workable idea.

The Jonagold should be flowering mid-May or thereabouts, I would take those flowers off.

My tree's still dry and dormant. I guess I'll need to stick it in water or a pot of soil while I think where we can put it? Same with the grape vine?

Any thoughts? I kind of figured that it would stay dormant until February at the earliest.

It's going in the garden RR and there are other crabs around.
