curry plant
« on: March 24, 2010, 16:07 »
I have a large curry plant, the one that looks like heather or lavender.
The leaves smell wonderful when the rains come or you brush against them, but can the leaves be used for cooking in any way?
I have Googled this, but get differing answers, so I thought I'd ask the people I trust - that's you!
Any suggestions welcome.
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

I know I was looking at this herb yesterday in my herb book but I can't remember what it said. I haven't used it myself but I'm sure it said you could, and it's a trustworthy book!

If I remember rightly, I don't think i has much flavour.  When I grew it years ago, I just used to chuck a few stalks onto my BBQ fire, everything smelt wonderful!!

According to this site http://www.gardeningcentral.org/curry_plant/curry_plant.html

curry plant and curry leaf (which is used in cooking) are not the same thing.  I haven't read the whole article though.

I've only ever used curry leaf and remove it after cooking like you would bay leaf.

Hope this helps

We also use curry leaves in cooking, but we leave ours in and eat them as they become very soft and edible, unlike bay leaves.
The curry plant we have is like a lavender bush, with lots of spine type leaves.
When I first planted it I used to stand in the garden and wonder where the curry smell was coming from, thinking one of the neighbours was cooking a lovely curry. Plonker. (Me, not you)

As others have said, this is not the same as curry leaf.

The only way I have ever used the grey leaved shrubby plant is pushed under chicken skin before roasting -- you have to like the smell of curry a lot though  :D

the curry plant here is a helichrysum. The curry leaves that we put in curries are completely different. I don't think the helichrysum is edible

It is edible in that it is not poisonous, but more is useful for flavouring thatn an actual ingredient, if you see what I mean  :)
