7 week old chicks
« on: October 04, 2009, 19:47 »
Our black rocks are 7 weeks old now,and are still with mum seperated from rest of the flock. For the last few days, the mum has been pacing up and down the netting where the others are kept and is being a lot noisier than normal. She has been laying eggs again for the last 2 weeks, but seems ever so keen to get back amongst her sisters. Are the chicks old enough to manage by themselves, they are all feeding well, and i was wondering if they
will  go to there coup on their own at night,or do they need mum around for a bit longer..thank you..Lorie x

They should be fine on their own now Lorie :)

If Mum heads back to the others at night then the chicks may follow so if you do want to keep them separate you may need to move them around at night for a night or two :)

Otherwise now is the time to let them mingle in together :)

Hi - mine were 6 weeks old when my black rock got up one morning and laid an egg!! She spent that night with them, but after that - they were on their own. She went back to join her old flock!! It was like she'd never seen them before. Apparently once they've taught them all they can, they leave them to get on with it!! I was shocked and horrified, but they got on fine on their own. All stuck together tho and sunbathed together!! They are separating out now and are 11 weeks old - but it was no trouble. They are amazing mothers, but when their job is done, it's done!! They will be fine!!   :D :D :D

Yes they go from being such good mums, showing them what to do and rosey when they find something for the chicks to eat... to pecking them when they try to eat and generally being really mean!
