Title: free solar hot water panel yes free in Northamtonshire
Post by: Madame Cholet on September 13, 2010, 23:18
I'm just about to have a solar panel installed and paid for by the council.

This sceme opperates in Nothamptonshire, they keep it very quiet I only found out from a friend.

I qualified for this grant because I was ontax credits and a low income no sure what other benefits are included.

It's my own house not a council house i'm in east northants but it covers the whole county.

I've got a combi boiler and they can run the new system so the combi only works when the water in the tank is below a certain temperature.

Hope others can take advantage of this

That's excellent - and making it work with a combi is brilliant. I know combi boilers are supposed to be better but I'm not 100% convinced with ours that running 1 gallon off to get hot water out of the tap is greener!

Checkput a company called ISIS. They are fitting the electric solar panels for free!  :D

I found them through moneysavingexpert.com

It helps reduce your electric bills.

It works by you being 'on-grid', what you use comes from the panels and the grid, and what you don't use goes into the grid and pays for the panels.

All they ask is that you have a unobscured south facing roof.

I was only thinking this this morning, as I looked at a little bit of washing up. If I can I will delay washing up till I put the washing mashine on, or want water for something else. Also have a bowl handy to catch the first lot, and it is a small washing up bowl full, and use it for watering. Doesn't work in winter though. :)

It has to me miniumum of 25m2, which is quite a large roof.

The day they give these things to tenants in social housing I would be first in the queue.  Alas, as a Housing association tenant and by definition less well off, I can't get the benefit of saving a few bob. ::)

I think you would be hard pushed to fit it on the average semi house roof.

10 m wide by 2.5 from gutters to ridge is 25m2 and that has to be Due South

The combi is really cheap for me I use about one unit of gas a month apart from when its sub artic and the heating goes on up stairs.

Yep solar thermal panels are great.

Had ours in a couple of years now, and its amazing when they operate to add heat.

Had ours working when below -5 C outside recently, and still adding heat.

Hi Folks,
if you check out the energy saving trust there are companies who will fit solar panels to any house free of charge, the company then receives a qualifying check every year from the government ( i think it costs around £2k for the panels) but the cheque depending on your output can be up to £1k  per year for a ten year contact ( £10k). you get  some free electricity ( around 60%) and the installers get a cheque every 12 months from national grid/ government subsidy that is certainly the case in scotland. I work for one of the big 6 energy firms, and  i am currently waiting for a call about 6 panels for my house. Will let you know if anything else comes up. 8)
