Title: Today I'm going to ...
Post by: New shoot on March 26, 2020, 08:19
How we are all doing today?

I have to go to work later (food shop) but I am going to potter a bit in the garden this morning.  OH is off work for the moment.  He is going to be a temporary delivery driver for the place I work for, to help with the extra on-line orders we will be be getting.  Yesterday he did a 10 minute run and spent the rest of the day aching.  Today it was 30 minutes cycling first thing.  I asked him to go and open the gate as the bin men were due and got a plaintive 'I don't know if I can walk that far'

So what are you up to?  You might inspire someone else or even pick up an idea for something you have been meaning to do, but not got around to yet.  Staying active in body and mind are so important, so let's get through this together  :)

be digging a hole to put a fence repair pin in. When I've done all I can my neighbour will take over, mixing the concrete to go around it. (I know postcrete is easier, but I'm using up what I already have, rather than arrange a delivery)
Neither of us are planning to be in the garden at the same time   Sounds silly - but needs must ;)

The diminishing contents of my freezer revealed two bags of raspberries, one from last year, the other the year before, so today I'm going to make some raspberry jam (probably enough for two jars so one will be 'stockpiled', the other will be used for a buttered toast-and-jamfest!  :)

Other than that, more weeding (not fun, not exactly an inspirational idea, but necessary.)

We have already been for a little walk round the park at the back of our house. No one there so it’s fine. Today I’m going to continue to miss my children and grandchildren, but will enjoy carrying on sorting my shed. I will also continue repotting fuchsias and the like which are all sprouting well.
I hope that Plotfather will put a second coat of paint on the bathroom ceiling.

Today, I have re-instated my Sainsbury on-line shop.  I Haven't used it since Mum died.    Once I got into it I quite enjoyed it.   Was tricky to set up as I had forgotten my password and got locked out.  But its ok now and I have got an order for Sunday between 2 - 3pm.   Mind you, I wonder how much will arrive !!   The only other problem  I had with it is trying to check if my Nectar card is still linked.   Nightmare -   how difficult can it be !   I have given up on that for now.   If there are no points, I shall try to sort it then.  Apart from that, I am having to stay indoors waiting for a call back from SSE  !!  Take care folks.   Mrs Bouquet

I've been out and painted four fence panels with wood preserver.  Usually only do them every other year so the front ones are not due this year but needs must, it was just a touch up job really where the colour had faded or worn.  Will carry on this tiresome task, as and when the mood takes  me.  Like Plotmother missing my Grandchildren who were supposed to be coming over at Easter.

I was told that shops pick up stock for home delivery from the shelves and it was best to order early in the hay because the locusts hadn't gotten to everything yet.

After I've walked.the.dog.I'm going to dead.head the daffodils in the front garden and tidy the borders.  Then I'm going to do some embroidery,  my son, who I love.very.much, thought a cross stitch sampler  would be an ideal christening gift for.his.goddaughter. I can only work on it for an hour at a time, it's had me in tears and I am very glad.the.christening has been delayed. This afternoon I'm going in the greenhouse for a.little seed sewing.

I'm going to make some lunch in a bit, then head off to the plot for an hour or so.

I was told that shops pick up stock for home delivery from the shelves and it was best to order early in the hay because the locusts hadn't gotten to everything yet.

I think it is all change very soon on this. I have been told to ignore what my rota currently say for the next few weeks, as I may be going onto shift work, round the clock and 7 days a week.

Hence I am trying to get the plot as ready as I can, so I can dash up there even more erratically than I do at present and shove stuff in as and when

We have shut our business down for now, so hopefully all will be OK. If we can get going again, I will just have to fit that in around it ... somehow

...chip and saw all the garden rubbish which the council can't take away until further notice!

I don't mind at all, as our whole front garden and drive is made over to wild flowers and shrubs, and which only needs a layer of mulch or a three-monthly strim, so it's a win-win for me!

My only problem so far is to actually find the garden 'muncher'...

... bake some sour dough loaves I made last night, cook some dhal for our lunch, potter in the garden with the chickens for an hour or so, then go to the plot this afternoon.

The sun is out but there is a chilly breeze.  I am going to wrap up and get out there anyway to make the most of it  :)

1 Wait for the arrival of some garden stuff that will turn up in the next few days so that I can tidy up the home garden - garden centre is selling what it has by email as it can't open.
2 Wait for the greenhouse to be repaired - it needs polycarb going back in before I can use it.
3 Do some housework though how much you can make if there's one of you in a small bungalow
4 Maybe even make a cake for me

go to the allotment this afternoon with OH to burn pile of rubbish hopefully not upsetting anyone  ;)
It is in the middle of a bed so stopping me digging it ready for brassicas.
Take a stake down for propping up an apple tree which fell over and thought it had died until saw lots of shoots on it  :)
Cut the grass at side of plot.
Have potatoes to plant but maybe another day.

I'm having an easier day today as a lot of gardening has been done over the previous couple, plus it is freezing and blowing a gale out there.

So far, we have visited the workshop to catch up on a bit of paperwork for our business and I have fetched a paper for my neighbour and left it outside in our pre-arranged spot for deliveries.

Other than that, I am going to do a Sunday roast, but with chicken portions, plus do a bit of planning for the plot/seed sowing, now I have all the plot areas ready to go.  OH is studying YouTube videos on how to edit his home shot footage.  I may be a movie star yet - more likely the chickens will be though

Today, other than offering to take the local pensioner's grass clippings away to be composted I took some of our seedlings out of the propagator as they are too big. I need to pot some of them on, if it's not too cold. It's Baltic out there.

I never did the chipping - it was too damn cold...

So I cleared out the pantry shelves and floor and made a new shelf for all the panic buying - paaaaah...

Result! Enough dog food tins, some pasta we'd totally forgotten, a jelly sachet with the sell/by date 2016, a dust-pan and brush, a dirty old kick-step which will take a day to restore, and a few more items...

Life ain't easy, but sometimes more fun...

Yesterday's plans got a bit interrupted by a quick visit to a vet with a neighbour's dog.  She is OK, but is suspected of snuffling up something she should not have in the garden.  She has been known to before and has made herself properly ill this time  ::)  A few days of antibiotics and a bland diet for you my girl !

Today ... go to work later, unless I get called in earlier.  OH registered as a temporary home delivery driver last week and has been asked to come in this morning, so who knows.

I also have a shopping list texted to me by a neighbour to get while I am there.

Other than that, I am going to have a tidy up in the greenhouse (a.k.a. the greenhouse shuffle) and maybe sow some more seeds  :)  If I can magic up room

Today I have
1. got a new electric hand whisk-last one in the shop! It's a non essential so I don't know if they'll get more in, drivers are off or have more important things to deliver.

2. I've gone to a community orchard with the loppers and trimmed off all the cankerous branches I could reach. There's one bit I can't get to on my own. I need to take a knife to the rest of the patches so that'll be tomorrow's walk with the Husband.
3. Husband has gone to the Garden centre of choice and picked up the 6x chicken manure, 2x pellets for the allotment and other stuff for the garden. He's leaving it in the car park to preserve the safe distance, but he's lining the orders beside each other which is counter productive.
4. I caught the last neighbour and told her we'll take her grass clippings, veg and fruit peelings and she was happy to accept.
5. To do, I will take the exhausted compost and mix it with NPK and the 6x chicken manure for planting things out.
6. I will separate the seedlings into separate pots.
7. I will try and figure out what volume these pots are.
8. I will read up on chillies and find out do they like fertile compost or do they need to be treated mean. Maybe put them into their end pots. If anyone knows if I should gradually work them up pot size please tell
me.
9. Homework with Eldest.
10. Make rainbows
11. Modify to add, put the folded laundry away.
12. Pancakes. Omn nom nom nom.

Today, I will mostly be trying remortgage the house, teaching homeschool, nagging about chores, shouting at all of them to shut up while I try to remortgage the house (the dog has taken to barking at random things and the child does not want to do chores and is being a pita because screens are forbidden in school time) logging onto Ocado to see what they are doing with editing orders this week (they are not actually telling anybody, you just have to log on and see whether you can edit your order or not, as the moment, which is tricky, because I have no idea when I will next get one. I understand but an email would not go amiss, Ocado!). Then we will ride up to the plot this afternoon, do a bit more digging over as far as tolerance allows. Bike repairs en route, and home for leftover chicken stir fry and hot baths. I might start some more seeds, and the chicken carcass needs putting in for stock, too. Oh, and two loads of laundry. Knitting and gin later, and we all badly need an early night after the ridiculous messing about with the time again.

Complete with screaming, shrieking and awful loud music that you can hear streets away so I stayed inside and was cross. Got laundry sorted though.

Today I have remembered to have a look at a friend's apple tree. Husband and I will go and saw off the cankerous bits and apply potash to help it get over it's bitter pit. The potash is already at her house because we didn't know about Corvid-19 so it was safe to leave it there. The kids will have to play in the garden while he saws the infected branches off. Husband's thinking of heeping the branches in the second plot's shed-the one with the door hanging off to season so he can burn it at a later stage. Apple apparently smells nice and the shed is a safe distance from the apple trees nearby.

We're about to go to the plot where I'll turn Husband's apple into a family tree-it's a triploid and needs 2 pollination partners so it'll have to grow it's own ones. We have the friend's scions, Sunset, Crispin and 2 others, I'll have to go look them up during tomorrow's allotted session outdoors.

We'll apply chicken manure to the plots and fork a bit of the top plot over to stop the grass taking over.

Right, now to get this lot in their wellies.

Today I was looking after the munchkins so mummy could go to the new house & continue decorating (they’re living with us so same household) . I didn’t think I’d get any gardening done but after the children’s daily walk went in the garden & they planted my competition potato ( not that I think there’ll be a competition let alone a show in August) plus another potato so they’ve got 1 each, then I planted a camellia seed I was given that had been soaking .
So all in all I got more done than I expected  :D

The side gate and all front fences are now painted, and four in the back garden are done.  Instead of working one or two days a week in our shop I've moved  to three and it looks like a full week next week.  We are a hardware shop  and at the moment are struggling to keep up with demand for paint especially.  We even sold a pair of garden shears today that have been here for fifteen years!!!!

I will brush up the seeds the sparrows don't like and put them under a hedge because some bird will like them.

So far I edged the border, weeded, Husband added the manure and we "mulched" with some moss I used the 3 tine cultivator to drag out of the "lawn". We filled a knee high trug and a 2x2x2 1/2 foot box to take up to the allotment with the effort from today and moss rakings I did a few days ago. So I am pleased.
I also did the edging cut for the other bed. But Husband wasn't impressed as it wasn't straight but I'm planning on widening it so no worries. He'll get his stick out, make sure it's straight and wave it about until it's pointing in the right direction and look all impressed with himself.

Most have had some sort of cleaner in them unfortunately. Found out that there's been a Corona outbreak in the warehouse so it's stuck until the place has been deep cleaned. Annoyingly the supermarket has some, but the reviews say that they break within a few weeks.

Could you possibly add post pictures of chickens on the blog to your to do list?

Yesterday I moved the Norfolk plastic greenhouse to the other side of the garden. I've lost a bit more of the lawn, but it's doubled  the size of my garden veg-bed.I have to fix it down to the wooden bearers today, and clean it. That's one job I hate - but needs must ;)
Bags of Wickes manure and some compost being delivered sometime today, so even if I do stop going to the allotment, there'll be somewhere to grow some veg!

With the cleaner bottles, rinse well three times, then test spray something you don't value with water.  If it doesn't keel over within a few days I reckon you are in business  ;)

Thank you so much.

According to the website we'll get the misters tommorrow before 8pm. So we'll see how that goes.

Today I'm going to continue weeding another bed, pot up my Charlotte Russe mulberry bushes and Cherry bomb chillies- in the pink pots. I'll also grump about my misters not being here. GGGGGRRRRRRR

Gale force winds so nothing was done today. I couldn't even edge a border because I was blown over, I'm no feather weight. Well I cleaned and rearranged a pair of cupboards and folded laundry. But that's not sorting out my plants is it? I did volunteer to weed the In laws border.

Well we pulled up one of my rescue blackcurrants that wasn't showing a sign of reviving, it's two mates on each side, new branches up, doing well and making us happy to see them progress. This one looked dead so Husband pulled it up and found the roots were horrible. Grey and covered in disgusting slime. Massive slugs everywhere and loads of slug eggs. Which was distressing as I've been feeding it the cooked vegetable water and sat out with them last summer enjoying the weather beside it. So I poured boiling water into the root hole to kill the eggs, put the blackcurrant into water and I stabbed the slugs with my Ho-Mi. We'll plant the spare where-will-we-put-this-blackcurrant? in it's place.

I m going to walk to the shop with the dog to get milk and bread.  If we go her favourite way it's about 2 miles.  Then I'm off to my sons allotment.  He is one of the many exhausted keyworker brigade and I have agreed to do some work on his plot.  Today I'm planting some spuds and a couple of rhubarb crowns.  I  will probably give his shed a clean/tidy as well.  My plan is to get it ready, and keep it tidy so that when he has time to visit its not a total bomb site.  Half an hour on the dreaded sampler this afternoon.

So those days when I thought it would be lovely to just sit and read -now I can I don't want to!

Today I did some cankerous trees, gave up on one as it looked like there was patches where branches had been. But there was a huge patch hidden under the bark, every limb had a patch every few inches and it's too advanced.  :(. I also weeded down there as well and I have a massive blister.
Husband re-edged and I weeded the 2nd 3rd of the border which was mostly overgrown grass and crowded strawberries so we replanted that bit. Replacing the old strawberries with their children and filling the space with 6 hyacinths-3 each of white and blue. Eldest helped with the planting which was lovely. I took more moss out of the lawn. We swapped one of the 3 currants in the corner with a larger one as everyone is tripping over it and taken the leaves off the original occupant. A red currant is in where we pulled out the slug infested blackcurrant. The borders have been fed, everything watered. NPK on the pot plants. Just manure is needed now.

6x Cherry bomb chillies were repotted. I need some more pots of the correct colour before I do the other 3.

Busy day.

What's left, just the manure on the potted currants.

Thanks Yorkie!

The other night, we watched the last episode of 'To play the King', the second Michael Dobbs trilogy 'House of cards'!

It was so exiting - and scary, that the next morning (yesterday), we kept asking each other what happened etc, so we had to watch it again last night...

Wow, what an incredible prog that is, well worth a re-visit after twenty-five years, and often on Ebay!

Today I am going to finish that last 3rd of the front and pot up some seedlings. Some of which will sit outside with me to get toughened up. Mostly you leggy legumes.

We should go up the plot, but it's 30mph and the soil is as dry as dust. We haven't had decent rain since storm Ciara. Digging=soil+dust+wind+eyes=  :( and pain.

Also we planted 4 of the blue and white hyacinths, not 3.
Title: Re: Today I'm going to ...
Post by: WeavingGryphon on April 07, 2020, 08:26
Today I will add more scions to the tree out the back in the garden. I have some large potatoes chitting, I'll probably divide them before we leave.

Up the plot we are going up after breakfast and digging over the main body of the plot. Or what's left after planting all the fruit. That's for to grow potatoes, onions and beetroot. Dig it over, spread chicken pellets, NPK and leave until later this week and hope we get some rain to activate it. I watered in the garden yesterday and an hour later the Husband was working on the same patch and told me he wouldn't know it's been watered if he hadn't seen me do it. We haven't had proper rain since Storm Ciara, I think one heavy shower and a handful of hail showers, but they didn't drop much moisture. The soil is like a biscuit up the plot. This week we're 5x chances for a light shower, but less than a 40% of it happening.

We have onion sets and seeds so we may plant some of them and cover with fleece to keep the super lardy wood pigeons from eating them. I have a mystery plant to plant. It's more than likely a Jostaberry that we put in the lawn that the Husband and kids kept tripping over, so had to be taken out of the garden.

To bring,
seeds-onion + beetroot, onion sets, rake, 3 tine cultivator, the plant, gloves. Change of child clothes, something for them to drink. Wet wipes, spray, hand wash (latter 2 in the car). Tub to carry chicken manure around in.

Modify, string, bring string for to plan out the drills.
Modify again, check shed for seed trays and make up more salad greens. If there is no trays up there sow in the tops of egg boxes because there are no plant pots. Also plant the perennial spinach sorrel in the corner between the autumn rhubarb.
Modify again, bring up the moss I dragged out of the lawn and the edging soil.

"ITV 4, "Minder".   Poor old Arthur !!!  "

Peter Childs, Inspector Ronnie Rycott to you, used to live a few yards from here, and he liked a pint or three, and always chatted with us whenever he could, with a lot of fun and humour!

Once, quite a few years ago, I was having a beer with a chum in a famous London pub, 'The Castle', near to the BBC rehearsal rooms in North Acton, and there was Peter, with lots of easily recognisable actor chums, regaling everyone about the good things in life, and everyone was having a great time.

When he spotted me across the bar, he immediately called me over and introduced me to everyone in his group, including the landlord, who actually lived in Brighton, and drove to his pub in his Rolls Royce every day! Of course, I was dumbstruck, and, what was so nice was, afterwards, the landlord always treated me as a chum, and Peter was always the same - sadly until he got some nasty disease far, far too early.

His wife, Jackie, moved away a few years later, after running a chaotic allotment here, much to the chagrin of all the old boys who moaned about her all the time, but she cared not a jot! Great lady too, and also great fun!

Get dressed.
Allotment again, it was really busy yesterday. Today's aim is not to hurt myself, remember painkillers, get as much done as we can. Husband wants to start planting the potatoes. He's the one who can judge distances so it's up to him.

Fork over the soil and rake, take up more garden stuff=-leave some for the birds as the garden is heaped with birds taking some, spread over the rubbish plot, mark drills, leave Eldest and Husband to put potatoes in, make sure Husband still has string

Take up the plant I forgot, the tool box, check tape measure is in place, chalk to mark drills, rake, 3 tine cultivator, juice for kids. Fill the beer fermenter with water to take up as all our newly put in plants are wilting. potatoes, cut the huge potatoes including Mr PURPLE and one is called. Biscuits maybe, kids briefly complain less when their mouths are full, bubble rods. Cover the onions and beetroot with fleece to keep the lardy pigeons off (one face planted it's crop was that full).

Love it, Christine!

Years ago, these cars were the starter-car of choice, and once one was seventeen, there was invariably a Ford Pop around to buy!

About then (1960s), there was one in the village which kept changing hands for £5, which meant that once one of the lads had driven it until he could afford to get a better car, he'd just sell it to a chum for the same price!

The pub where the whole village used to meet was also a breeding ground for 'Arfur Dalys', and a good chum even sold his Morris van for a pint of bitter!

Happy days...:0)

Today we planned to go to the allotment and do what we were supposed to do yesterday (I was too sore) and day before (virtual class).

We did and we finished the digging plot and it's filled with potatoes! We watered and weeded.

We are going back once the Sheewee arrives because now just isn't fun. Husband is the only one of the 4 of us capable of keeping clean. Then it's to weed, to water and plant pickling onions between the furrows. We'll pickle them tiny before the potatoes get any height.

We may put cabbages in the bottom plot in front of the shed.

Today's plants were cancelled because it's freezing and very windy outside. Not good for seedlings.

I made bread, 2x wheaten bread and one plain white which is sitting under the heated clothes dryer as we speak. One is actually multi grain flour but the same recipe because it's nice.

I forgot that these are pound loaf tins and I'm making kg loaves. So part of one batch is in a giant cup cake silicon mould. Which is fine, the In Laws can have that one. Then I forgot I was making double sized breads and added half the milk I needed. Also the loaf I made last weekend had rye flour, which is a thirsty flour and absorbed all the water, so they looked the same lucky I realised in time and added more. I wonder if if these will work out okay or be horrible in some fashion.

Not quite.
I tried them in the halogen oven for the first time because the oven is a fickle beast. Turns out halogen ovens aren't for bread so while it was nice, I had to put the oven on for the white yeasted loaf. As

Halogen ovens +bread = scorchio top + runny middles + just not entirely cooked.

If Husband hadn't eaten the charred bit we'd have had a medieval feast tonight using it as trencher bread.

But the non scorched bit tasted nice and the white yeasted oven one was the best bread I've made yet. I tried sourdough, but gave up, you were adding so much flour, binning loads and we didn't get through the bread fast enough to use the to be binned stuff.

I keep my starter in a jar in the fridge.  It gets fed once a week.  1 cup of starter, 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of water gets whisked up together and put back in the fridge.  The cup of starter left over needs a couple of spoons of flour, a splash of water and 24 hours out of the fridge to be ready for bread making.  I find that makes enough to keep us going for another week.

I'm going to plant out the peas and beetroot and put the chillies out into the garden since it's due to be lovely. Laundry, fold laundry and put it away. I have a folded mountain.
Finish extending the front border and plant hyacinths in there as well as strawberries or raspberries now Husband has edged it. That bit was all stones so they need to be lifted and put in the other stony border. Finish weeding between the flags and lift the weeds into the trug.

Yesterday we planted up the beans and peas in the garden. Husband edged.

Don't risk your wrist, it's the start of the season and it's giving you long term problems. Pay a handyman or friend to do it for you. If I remember correctly you do the safe workmen list locally? It's maybe an hour's work so it won't cost you much.

Or even call past a man or woman in the street who likes gardening or DIY. Ask them for a hand, afree a price and spray the notes down before leaving them under a stone nearby. If a neighbour called past us for help the Husband would put his gloves on and I'd get the hoe out to give it a spread.
It'd be a diversion.

Those are wise words, but I have now finished it.   However I did put my wrist splints on with big rubber gloves over.    The patio is wash down and scrubbed, although it will need something else as it has stained.    My clothes are just spinning and I have scrubbed all the tools I used and my "Crocs", -oh, and my body.    What a relief to get that out of the way.  .  Thank you for your advice WG, I know you are right.   Sometimes I forget my age etc, and think, no probs, I can do that   ::) ::)   Mrs Bouquet

I’ve been cooking this morning, but I think I might sow some more tomatoes this afternoon. I reckon I can start the outdoor ones off.

Sweet corn can also get chitting on damp paper towel  :)

My biggest ever fear, worse than a volcanic eruption, or a visit from men from Mars, is finding that our runner beans haven't germinated...

I have nightmares about this, as Mrs Growster has only a few addictions, but a decent crop of runners is an absolute must, on pain of excruciating torture and perpetual abuse..:0(

So I went out and sowed another back-up crop this morning, just to be on the safe side...

The sweetcorn I set chitting a couple of days ago is already sprouting, so the first of them need potting up.  I am now looking at the bean packs and trying to stop myself   I think another greenhouse reccy is needed to see what can be moved out to the cold frame and onto the plot.

I also need to clean the chickens out and top up the fish tank water.

Weed anywhere, sort out the front border and get the raspberries in, plant out the trough with beetroot and put the peas in a grow bag. Water.

Husband, get the trough planter, water up the allotment, water children.

This is a bit premature, but tomorrow, I'm going to...

Sow some spinach seeds, some rocket seeds, some radish seeds, some lettuce seeds, and generally look at the whole shebang with some more love and affection...

Our gorgeous chum at our fabulous local GC delivered some seeds to us on her way home, late this evening, having worked her socks off and dealt with online orders all day, and, at 6'8" we all had a lovely chat over the gate, as a good hug was just out of the question, sadly...

My Goodness, this whole scenario ain't arf changed things...

I'm going shopping, have list from neighbour as well as mine.  On the way I will deliver some seeds to my son and loan him my garden sieve.

Then I'm going in the greenhouse to pot up my tomatoes.  As in previous years I have too many but this year some of the excess have been promised to neighbours.  I also want to sow some spinach and salad leaves.

Today I am making the chickens very happy. We get to take home the unsold stuff going out of date that day at work and yesterday was 2 punnets of strawberries and a bag of salad leaves.

The strawberries were a bit squishy here and there, so I have the good ones and the chucks are filling their boots with the rest. They got the salad leaves as well as they were a bit sad looking. Chucky heaven though  :)

More work looming soon but tomorrow I am free, so off to play on the plot  :D

Today I finally gathered up enough plastic milk containers to empty the fish tank into them. So that's nearly 175L of fish poo water joy for the plants up the allotment.

I made bread, that actually rose and worked as bread. It was comparison loaves so they are very similar, Matthews was less messy though and seemed to have better structure. What else. Sod all other than the faff of home made oven chips and a few online museum tours with the kids I think.

Plant some seeds, wipe down kitchen, remember zoom meeting time, continue clearing out garage.

We've lost a DVD that I totally want to watch and thought, maybe it's in the garage? Not so far  >:(
We binned a load of stuff though. I also checked up one one of the neighbours and had a chat to them.

Modify, try slow cooker partial sourdough rye bread (Pain de Campagne (‘country loaf’)) from the Brilliant Breads book. I got more yeast from the lovely man at the shop so it's an option and has been resting overnight. So it's had 12 hours to rest and is massive. I'm glad I move it up from the small, to the medium slow cooker.

Exciting day coming! We're going to far off Bangor (10 miles away) for a click and collect at the supermarket. Not done this before.. got disposable gloves at the ready. Must get up early and check the car's oil, tyre pressures and so forth. Print out a map on Mr Google in case I can't remember how to get there.
Nearly forgot, we'll need sandwiches and a flask for the journey.
I don't think I'll sleep tonight :)
And if we feel really brave and the car park at Home Bargains looks empty-ish then we might pick up some compost on the way home. It's used to be outside so I can flash in, wave a card at the machine and run back out to load them into the car. They're 40 litre bags so my back can handle them.
After weeks of going no further than the post box, it's going to be very strange.

We survived the massive trek to the far off metropolis of Bangor. Drove up, opened the boot and a nice young lady put the bags in there for us. Could not have been easier or safer - certainly as safe as having something delivered. Only time I've enjoyed food shopping :)
Drove into the Home Bargain car park which was surprisingly busy, so straight back home without getting out. Didn't even need my disposable gloves - although I put them on when we pulled up. Up to the polytunnel after I've had a cuppa to recover from the excitement of it all.
Being serious, amazed how many people were at the shops. Not just Tesco but others also had lots more cars in the car parks than I expected to see. Noticed how cheap fuel was .. now we're not using it much. Typical.

Being serious, amazed how many people were at the shops. Not just Tesco but others also had lots more cars in the car parks than I expected to see.

It was a big shopping day yesterday - way busier than I have seen it for a while.  I got stuck on the shop door for a while to restrict access, but everyone was completely fine about it and very nice  :)  They were happy shopping, so not many big trolleys, but lots of folk buying treats and BBQ stuff and making the most of a bad situation.

Today I have my own version of mega excitement  :D  A day off whoop whoop  :D  Off to the plot to play with strimming edges, planting out brassicas and watering on the agenda.  Then back home to clean the chickens out and sow seeds.

Nice lunch/tea planned of chicken with asparagus from the garden and greens from the plot.  I may even go mad and make a crumble.  I have a bottle of vino collapso for a glass or two this evening  :D

Losing the will to live after a bit.
I also did some accounts work - rough calculations of how much we've got in the business, what we need to put aside for the tax man and so forth. Could be better but it could be a lot worse - it must be awful for publicans, restaurant owners and so forth. No customers, no idea what's coming. In a nutshell, I'm very grateful to be where we are.

My old business partner sent it to me recently, and it is such a pleasant and informative interlude about a much-misunderstood, but well-loved character - Syd Barrett - in Pink Floyd!

Here's a GG poem for you all and hope it gives you a laugh or something.

I wear so many hats so I get up and feed the cats
Then I make some cups of tea and watch the news on the BBC.
It's the only way that I can face
To clean up what my OH left
In my clean kitchen late last night.

As we're moving home and my garden's in a mess,
I've just put my apron on
And now have turned my Dyson on
Just to clean up once again.

I'd love to sow a lot of seeds
But my plot is full of weeds.
And there's more washing to be done
But I can still find bits of fun
So does it matter how we do it
When we feel so low and blue?

No, it matters one jot
When you show OH how to put
His pots and plates and pans in the dishwasher.
Which might just result in a mega-disaster.
You could always apply some sort of a plaster.
Make him a cocoa and put him to bed
Then find where he's hidden the keys to his shed.

Ring up your girlfriends. "We're going to a party
And going to be ever so naughty"
When we've drunk all his beer and his wine
Then we'll all have a jolly good time!

We'll wash all his laundry on 90 degrees
And all of us will be ever so pleased
When he comes back from the pub with a massive hang-over
And he says "Oh my god! I will never do all that again!"

Then you say" Oh my lover, I'm also hung-over
But I managed to peg up your washing outside
Which seems to have shrunk, so I'm doing a bunk
With my little bit I've got on the side."

I'm having a lazy start to the day, but will be going to the plot to plant out stuff.  If I have energy after that, I am going to do some gardening at home.  I got the grass cut in the back yesterday afternoon and some weeding done, but the front needs a tidy.

There is chicken defrosting for a roast dinner later, so some gentle kitchen activity will follow to round off the day  :D

Lazy day in the back garden doing a bit of tidying up and raking of moss out of the lawn. Come Friday might just do some more of that raking (day off the allotment as it's a bank holiday).  It's a reaction to having to clear a messy corner on allotment number 2.

So much for resting the leg up. I also slept funny so it's so sore. Painkillers full steam ahead.

Today is finish the hallway.

Yesterday I got bored and pulled out a sofa and bookcase and hoovered under them, then wiped the skirting board. So while I was enjoying a clean skirting board I decided to wipe the skirting boards and wall down in the hallway. The paint is emulsion so it's conversion from nasty ice white to peach continued. It's a textured wallpaper with roses on so the high bits were peach and fading down to ice white with some grey. It was hideous. Did you see the tense change there?

The hall is now antique cream, the same colour as the 5L tin we had in the garage.
I roped the Husband initially to do the small bit at the bottom of the stairs. But now 3/4 of the entire hallway is done. Downstairs from the kitchen door to the front door, across above the front door, above and below the window next to the door. then right up to the stairs to the landing. As well as above the banister on the other side and that bit on the other wall downstairs where youngest indulged in permanent pen. It's a U shape with one long side and a tiny bit inwards from the long side for the hallway upstairs, and we've done the outside of the long side of the entire shape, plus the top 3/4 of the inside of the long side. I'll try and recreate it using the keyboard. Long bit is the stairs, we've done the entire outer surface of that shape.

 _
I
I   I
I__I

We have to take the roller over the whole bottom that I brush painted because as it was plastered very roughly. There's brush work up the big wall surface to get the bits we missed, thank you textured flowery wallpaper from the 80s that no one removed. There's a small amount to be done in the top hallway as well, we're leaving one wall because it needs some repair work to retouch the plaster after a leak. That wasn't us, the landlord did that, but we will have enough paint to leave for to do that wall. And repaint future scuffs. Under the radiator wasn't painted (...!?) so we did that as well.

It's also emulsion, but it's not our house so we stuck with the theme. Also used what we owned which was handy. To be honest, it looks so much nicer than ice white pith peach highlights in places with marks that you couldn't get off. Being such a pale shade of cream it's not that much different. Other than lacking scuffs not not glaring. The landlord won't care, he's said as much in the past about a bit upstairs in the kids room.

We're thinking about painting the banisters, windowsill and skirting boards.

Why does emulsion exist? I couldn't wipe the wall to get rid of dust and whatever the marks were there beforehand, I still can't, but the big nasty marks are gone. Also the wall isn't a hideous ice white so bonus.

Today.
Ban children from the hallway between the livingroom to the kitchen. Take everything off the coat rack, put it outside and give it a good wipe down. Put the antique table in the livingroom. wipe it and the wall down as well then paint/roller it. Maybe a polish for the table. Roller the rough plasterboard downstairs, the white wall, brush and mop, paint upstairs and the bit below the banister to finish off the stairs. Paint around the doors upstairs. Much more fiddly.

Open the windows. Yesterday got a bit woozy.

Plan to sit back for the rest of the day, read a book and plan for the essentials that need doing down the plots tomorrow.

I've spent the lock down running round chasing my tail and trying not to be bored. Well I'm knackered and could do with a rest. So from now till Monday is rest and relax and do the minimum required. Maybe even sit in the sun and observe my kingdom which will soon be full of produce.

Get up into the roof to find all the old sheets we use when painting 'The Turrets', and get them organised so that the outside plants can get used to 'self-insulating' over the next few days, when we're due some chilly weather!

Then I'm going to sow some more seeds in succession, fill all the pots for the geraniums, move all the trays of baby salad around to get better light, and generally make a real mess of the whole place - all in one morning!

Then I'm going to have a short kip after lunch, as JRT woke me up very early, wanting to go out, and I didn't...

Check to see whether the runner bean and sweetcorn seeds have sprouted yet in their plastic boxes - if yes, sow into the paper pots I made yesterday.

Lockdown has meant I'm almost on top of the weeds (for now) - the weather has meant I'm spending a lot of time watering (I'm lucky enough to have an online weather station situated only a few hundred yards from my house, and the records show that in Feb we had 189mm of rain, March just 11mm, so far this May, 0.6mm.  :nowink:)

So it's been a day of sanding, brushing and painting, and I've also now got paint on my best gardening shirt, so as it's only about twenty-five years old, I'll seriously have to consider replacing it, probably in about five years time...

Back garden time.  It needs a sort out. Hasn't had one for years. Looking tatty in places. Thing is that stuff has been put in the border along the back next to the border fence and thick hedge where it's damp and shady so things aren't thriving. Whatever, even empty space might be better at the moment.

I was scanning pieces for the new book, correcting cropping etc.

I hope it's about home brew....!? Please?
I want to know how to make the orange pulp wine. Or alcohol in general.

I was looking at a sample of another book by a different author on preserving that's more flashy than yours, it's mostly her flouncing around in a skirt or a dress and hoping that'll help with sales. I hope you're not thinking of taking that up because I love your compact books, I can keep loads (all) of them on my kindle without them taking up loads of space on pictures.

I'm sure the entirety of you, and the bits of you between your shoulders and your knees are lovely in a dress. But it doesn't help me do any preserving or find what I'm after if the books are too big to keep on my device. And I'm flicking past so many pictures I can't easily find things or read a recipe.

I do like your wee doodles. And chickens being happy pictures, but I like looking at chocks.

I am also thinking about the weather next week.  I haven't planted out too much yet that could be trouble, but the stuff inside is raring to go, as you say.  They could all be playing sardines in the greenhouse.

I was going to put the laundry out but it just started to hail. I am completely unimpressed.

Well since I treated the counters in the kitchen and they are still tacky and unusable that means I'm going to sit in my stinky house and feel grumpy until they dry and the hail sods off.

Yesterday we made a batch of John's raspberry (our frozen raspberries) wine which is bubbling away to itself very happily, I made 2 loaves of bread in the slow cooker. One white one wholemeal and we have fish out for the tea. Or pizza. I just need to make sure there is no bluuping of sauce onto the units. I'm going to try and find a good recipe to cure a pork shoulder for tomorrow.

I'm going up the plots today. Think I may have to change the growing plan I have in mind. The usual bit of plot 2 is not co-operating. I need to start planting out some of the brassicas.

Sat down for yesterday so the back garden is still in need of attention. It's actually in need of a new planting regime. Don't want to resort to bedding plants/need to order new bulbs in the autumn for next spring/need to find two or three colourful perennials for next year. Matters not to be rushed. Lawn has needed replacing for years. That won't happen. Good thing it's only a little garden.

As we have thirty Sunflowers, I'll probably have to dig up another few square yards to make room for them as well - goodness knows where...

Went to the plot yesterday afternoon to get the strimming done. Today is plant out the last of the cabbage and a few greens and salads.

I need to check my seeds as well. I know swedes need doing but I’m thinking there are a few more that have been missed   Decision time as to whether to go for it or leave it for next year coming up

Had a day on the plot, just having a brew before I go back on.
Spent a little time weeding. Leek rows are now prepped ready for the leeks in a week or so to be transplanted.
Had a brainwave  see photo, this is now MK3 plastic bottle dripper system, this I think is the one.
Checked and gave a little feed to me tadpoles, they are growing up so quick now.
Got to sort what we are eating for tea in a bit as well and of course post the poem on the whatts app group.

Carry on with the revamp of the back garden,  an old lady lived here before and it was badly neglected, it is going to be a long job because it takes me twice as long to do half as much. LoL

...feel a bit mis, as all the plants are now out there in their new homes, and all I've got to do is start garden maintenance, like the hedges, painting the shed, hoeing etc!

It's a bit like the kids leaving home; a new phase, a new season...

Started the day with a nice 18 mile cycle ride up Blackpool prom and then inland and back home, for the most was fairly quiet.
Sat now waiting on a parcel to come.
Will pop onto the plot a little later when it has cooled down a little.

Have a manicure, pedicure, and my hair done.   When I finish there,  I am going to buy myself a nice Luncheon, and then go into the shops and buy myself some nice clothes.   THEN, when I awake from my daydream, I am going to work in the garden       Dream on,   What lovely things are you going to do today,   Mrs Bouquet

... try to finish thinking about what's happened over the weekend.

A dear, lovely, friend nearby was burgled on Saturday night. She is nearly elderly, in her middle eighties, widowed last year, a stalwart in our village, a friend to all, and the whole issue is making her so apprehensive, knowing that such slack-jawed, skiving, layabout cheats and barstewards are out there, taking their perverse advantage of the 'lockdown', and generally being utter contemptible thieves and charlatans and, by their disgusting behaviour, giving normal, law-abiding citizens a damn b****y good reason to despise this lazy, despicable, nasty dross of humanity we have to put up with in our British society.

We're all rallying round our lady chum, of course, but it brings it all back to home when such a disgraceful, cowardly, slimy act happens within yards of your own castle.

I rest my case.

Growster, that is appalling, poor lady.  Thank goodness she has the support of yourselves and the village.  Mrs Bouquet

These scroats are beyond contempt! I have various ideas what I'd like to do with them but the Mods would chuck me off the Forum tout-suite as I detest any kind of thievery no matter what sort it is. When you next see this lady please give her a mega-GG hug.
I've had a lot of practice over the years so you're going to have to have some lessons. Unfortunately I am not available due to certain circumstances but this is your first tutorial. Before attempting this, make sure there is a large comfy cushion she can fall on if needed.

You put your right leg in then your right leg out so you can get your stance correct.
Fling both arms in the air whilst rolling your shoulders to make sure your muscles are in good condition.
Put your paws on said lady's shoulders (you know how to do that so am not repeating it cos I've only done it with men) then ever so slowly move them onto her face and give her a big fat kiss on the lips, cheeks or whatever is available.
For H&S reasons please ensure you keep the social distancing as per.
If that's too much to resist just get one of those children's bubble-making jobbies and blow her a kiss or several.

Please do that for me or I'll reveal where you keep your stash of home-made brew! ;)

Been there, done that, Goosey;0)

She's the first lady I've hugged in all this time, (except for Mrs Growster of course) - she was so upset on Saturday, she got several hugs more, poor love!

Today (an 'I'm going to do something' day...), I'd planned to cut all the hedges outside our house and hers. It's
normally a two hour job and has taken me twice as long, as everyone has been passing by, and talking about her ordeal, and they're just lovely village friends (eminently huggable too, under normal circumstances - even a new face, so an extra hug may well be on the cards one day, so the hedge has started growing again pretty damn quick, and I may be some time...!

But I'd definitely like some more practice, so here's my telephone number - Whitehall 1212...;0)
