Shallots
« on: May 19, 2010, 19:41 »
Evening all

I went over the allotment last night and noticed all my shallots which looked lovely the other day started to look yellow and the leaves have all started to droop?

Any any ideas what could be wrong

Thanks
Missy

possibly onion fly , or even eel worms, check for chemical control!

Hi

Thanks for both your replies fingers crossed its nothing more than the need of a good feed - which prompts questions (Sorry) what is best to feed them?

Thanks
Missey

If they are just a bit under the weather i would give them a small dose of a balanced liquid feed.
My choice is liquid growmore but if you are organic look elsewhere ;)

in prolonged dry spells shallots and onions need a drink!  Only cut out any watering when they are on their way to maturing!

I have watered my shallots & onions a couple of times in the last month as the total lack of any prolonged rain showers has meant this is necessary...  also gave them a feed as well....
In actual fact they look the best theyve ever been!!

cheers

I think it is probably just lack of water but a liquid feed with something like tomatorite with high potash will do no harm. It is noticable that those planted before Christmas are OK but those not planted until late Febuary are suffering. Presumably their root system is not so good.
