Growng Strawberries From Seed
« on: December 10, 2012, 14:46 »
I'm thinking of trying strawberries from seed for next season instead of from runners as normal.
I'm starting a completely new bed in a different place on my allotment and last years crop was a disaster so I didn't contemplate using runners from them.

Any advice as to if it's worth it etc  would be welcome. Or should I just buy some runners.

Put the seeds in a freezer for a couple of weeks and start the seed in February.I did this last year for 4 seasons.

I have found that they germinate easily even without freezing, (even grew some straight from the strawberries), my problem was that they grew so slowly, that they weren't ready to plant out the first year and I lost them all over winter :(

I grew some this year from a slice taken from a strawberry, but only 3 germinated. They did grow quite large quite quickly, however, and are now in the lotty hoping to survive the winter. I shall watch them with interest next year to see if they fruit and how good or poor the fruit quality is.

Yes I grew mine from a slice. I am starting to think that generally I need to pot things on a bit sooner than I have been, that is why they are not growing fast enough. Do please let us know what the strawberries are like ;)
