Tonights Frost - Onions - A Question
« on: March 18, 2011, 17:26 »
Evening

I have covered the Earlyies that we have Chitting in the mini greenhouse ready for the frost tonight.

But should I do the same to the onions that are out there?

Cheers in advance

I would cover them! That way you can't go wrong!!!!!!!
It all depends what you put into the ground, to what you get out

Well my onion seedlings are in a plastic covered cold frame and they wont be getting any extra protection.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

It's not going to get that cold and they'll be fine overnight.

There's going to be a few frosts between now & whenever and no way am I running to the plot with fleece everytime.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You might be aware that there are onions you can plant to overwinter. I planted mine around the end of October and the next month they faced the worst snow we had seen in years and still came up ok. Dont worry about the onions they will be fine.

You do need to look after the spuds though. I lost half a row last year to frost in just one night. If they get frozen they will suffer.

Not needed, shallots are even harder than onion sets.
