Potatoes - a very newbie question!
« on: June 01, 2009, 07:16 »
Hello there :)

I planted my earlies in plenty of time and they're looking lovely now but missed out planting a main crop.
I didn't think I'd have enough room for more, due to lack of time though I have a whole bed waiting to be weeded and utilised!

Is it really too late to plant a crop of potatoes now? Even if they're overwintered?

Thanks

spuds will die back in the frosts so won't over winter except to grow you lots of unwanted plants next year.  you might be lucky and get a small crop though even if planted now.  I planted some a year or so ago in august and got some small spuds from them.  was an attempt at growing for Christmas but they all died back with the first frosts!

Thanks for your reply. I just did a quick search that came up with varieties such as carlingford, planted July/ Aug then harvested between Oct & Christmas. Is it foolish to think they'll be successful in the cold early winter?

Come the cold, they won't grow much more, they need to go in at the time stated in order to get new spuds for Christmas.

Just be warned though, if you trawl through this forum, you will find more tales of failures than sucesses.

However, if you can find some seed spuds left anywhere, you can still get a crop. A few years back after clearing Mrs Digger's plot, we were given some very shrivelled Charlotte seed spuds by another plot holder. This was in June & we had a cracking crop off them about September.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you have a greenhouse, you could try growing them in bags, just need to keep well watered and fed
