reluctantly offering leghorn to good home

I have come to the conclusion that my grey leghorn would be happier in a larger flock, wth lots more space to roam.
She lays white eggs and is a beautiful looking bird, but keeps escaping!
If anyone can give her a good home, and can collect her, please pm me for more details. Am feeling very sad about this decision, but I think it is for the best.

How does she escape Westie ? Does she fly ,is her wing not clipped ?

She flies even with her wing clipped, and clipped again!! When we first got her she flew up as high as our conservatory roof and she wasn't fully grown then. We have tried several contraptions on the chicken run, but I don't want to cover it in completely (part of it is covered, but not all). The other 3 girls are quite content with the space and only try to escape on foot if we leave their gate open by mistake.
My husband is getting very exasperated with her and has even picked her up to clip more feathers off...he's not into picking animals up!! :? One 'friend' suggested putting a ball and chain around one leg!! I reckon she'd still get out and knock one of the others out in the process :roll:

Gosh - how high can she fly with a clipped wing ? Most keepers say a 5 ft fence should keep them in.

I had one the same, we put colditz style chicken wire on the top of the 6 foot fence at an angle & she couldn't fly out & has stopped trying.

hhmm, that's what we'll have to do I think. :? She got out again today...she's always happy to go back though!

Is it a real problem that she gets out? If you leave food & water for her she will be fine I'm sure...just have to fence off flower beds/veg if you have them. It took us 10 mins to put the extension on the run, They do free range but when I'm around in the summer as we do have veg & flowers......in the winter they free range all day everyday.

I know how you feel Westie, it gets exasperating after you put them back in after the 10th time of them escaping doesnt it. I have one who flies very well with a clipped wing. She will also burrow under netting too. My netting is now 6.5ft and weighted down with 2x1 lengths and her wing is clipped to the very limit i can go to :roll: Seems to working for now but Im just waiting for when she has worked out her next move!

Shame as i drove through Berks the other day on the way to and From Herts. :roll: I've a covered run (netting). And have the space now as have new house in situ..

Was talking to a friend yesterday who used to have a cockerel that made his way up on to the roof - of their three storey house :roll: Went from porch to extension to dormer window apparently. And then crowed. At 4am. In a built up area.

They didn't keep him long

We would have her as we have a large covered run that she could fly about in but not escape. However, when I just asked how far away Berkshire is, my other half said no way!! :roll:

Think we've found a new home for Minty! But having problems contacting new owner about getting her there!! :roll: Will let you know outcome....

So happy you have found her a new home. I am worried that I am going to be in a similar position with a couple of my ducklings who are worryingly looking more and more like boys. Can only keep one for the sake of my girls but not keen on giving them the chop as raised them from egg and duckling.
