Title: Storing Potatoes
Post by: alwayshopeful on September 03, 2009, 16:48
Not sure if this should go in frugal living, but have had success so far with storing potatoes in reusable bags from supermarkets.  I mean the fold up material ones - specifically from Wilkinsons as they are black, but other shops do black to.

I only had quite a small crop, which gets used quite quickly so do not know if they would do for long term storage, but am trying it with shop bought spuds also.

That is actually not a bad idea!

Thinking about it, a lot of stores do the hessian bags & provided you put something on the top to keep out the light, they should be ideal.

Being smaller than sacks, they'll be easier to move around & handles as well!

i thought ideally you left the potatoes in the ground to store them... please correct me if i am wrong because this was going to be my plan!

Not a good idea to store in the ground. By the time I got to my main crop (golden wonder) the slugs had beat me to it. They also don't stand any frost.
I have bought an end of roll of thick, black hessian type material (£5 for 10m) and made all my sacks and plenty left over to make bags for leaves.

I'm storing all my good sound spuds in the deep strong cardboard trays tesco give away they stack really well and I have labelled them up as i graded them bakers roaster etc this way I can easily check if i missed the odd duff one its going bad. All the others are in paper sacks. with use first on them but my lot will probably ignore them!

diggerjoe, I can't quite visualise the trays you mean - but if the light can get in at all then the potatoes will turn green and poisonous  :(
