Hi,
I was given this conifer? shrub some 2 years ago,it has been in a huge pot since,I have recently replanted it into the paddock and now some leaves are going brown,is it lacking in something?I have odd soil here too.

Sorry to seem naive about the shrub,I have not had another like this and it seemed to be doing really well.It is around 4ft spread.

Any advice would be appreciated please :)

We transplanted three healthy conifers earlier this year. They were given a really good soaking and were moved at the right time of the year. They are now all brown and look dead. We think the cold weather has had a lot to do with it.

The conifer is a Golden Yew and I would say it has been allowed to dry out.  :D

Ours look as if they have dried out too but we have watered well and daily. It is an interesting situation.

DavidT Thanks so much, you are right,it had started to dry out in it's pot on a daily basis and why we planted out in the soil,I noticed lots of new root growth so hopefully it shall pick up again.

Keep the ground around it moist, it may well recover.

With lots of water it may recover, if it was me though I would cut off the dead bits to make it look better as the brown bits won't turn green again.  I would burn them or dispose in your green waste but don't put fir on your compost.

As David said, it is not a conifer but a Yew and so a deciduous tree.
It will grow back so do not remove the brown as suggested above.

Keep watered well and it may well recover.

I have a Yew in a pot that suffered while we were away last year, lots of brown, kept moist and repotted and now its full of green with healthy new shoots.

Unfortunately ours are definitely conifers and looking pretty dead  :( so they are going to be removed in the autumn. We have taken great care of them since we moved here but the house was empty for 18 months before we moved in. Maybe they dried out before we got to them, They were planted close together right up against a fence with next door's trees as a backdrop. Seemed a silly place so thats why we moved them. Looks like we got to them too late.

Sorry guys, my bad again.

But Yews will grow back after cutting and will resprout from cut wood, so my advice stands.
