Grafting tomatoes?

Grafting tomatoes?

why do they bother grafting the tomatoes, i dont understand the concept is it like grafting a cherry tom onto a beefstake one or something like that :wacko:

They graft a tomato that bears good fruit onto the roots of a plant that has been bred to have a very good strong root system which they believe will give you a better yield.

It is the same thing that they do with fruit trees, graft them onto a different rootstock :)

this may sound daft but bear with me.....
i understand that toms can be grefted onto potatoe plants but is there any other plants that they could be grafted onto??
or are there any 2 plants that could be grafted together to create stronger healther plants

thanks mum so its not really possible for an amateur to do this? do you know any examples of good rootstocks and goos fruit bearers  ??? :unsure:
not too sure mike, toms and spuds are the only ones i've heard of  :blush:

I don't think you can get the rootstocks that the suppliers use, they keep them and then charge lots of money for grafted plants  ::)

googled it earler on and found that the aussies  do it with wild tobaco plants and a few other ineddible plants aswell but the disclaimer on the website does say they are not responsible if someone gets poisnes toms
i was thinking more along the lines of finding somthing almost impossible to get rid of like marestail and finding something to graft onto that now i think ill just graft a nuclear warhead to it instead  ;)
