Dig or Plough for Manure
« on: April 14, 2008, 14:12 »
Hi I'm having my overgrown allotment ploughed on Sunday morning I've just "round-up"it yesterday, and was wondering whether to add some manure to the surface now and have it ploughed in or whether to dig it in or rotovate it in afterwards

Regards

If ploughed by a tractor, the resulting furrows will be coarse and difficult to plant in, so you'll need to further break this down unless the tractor owner is also disking or harrowing for you. I'd add the manure after the ploughing. Digging it in is fine if you can manage it. Personally, it's too time consuming for me, as well as exhausting, so I rotovate in the manure which also chops up the soil finer for planting. I also add shredded leaves which add loads of tilth and help water retention, and also builds the worm population which thrives on old leaves. Final decision is always yours.

question
