As above really, growing carrots in bins but each bin needs way too much compost so wondered if I could add some of last years mushroom compost. Ta  ;)

I used to grow carrots in old compost that had been used for toms, underneath i put a lot of plastic lemonade bottles to raise the level.
Compost and builders sand 50/50 was a good growing medium !

Well it does have some sand in by accident as Harry was helping make me a castle apparently  ::)

We're doing this with some of last year's compost, and also the stuff which gets left behind when potting on seedlings.

We're aiming to sow into six cheapo black buckets from B and Q (85p each!), with new drainage holes. The idea is to sow every three or four weeks, with a final sowing around September for the winter supply! It worked last year, and I cleared out the last bucket only this week!

The mushroom compost has broken down well I just wanted to check first, we also emptied one of the compost bins and the black stuff is wonderful.

I'm putting some in tubs and buckets this year so I can raise them above the carrot fly. I've already sown Chantennay and will be following with early nantes and maybe one other type. So far I have used fresh Verve and sharp sand. I hope they wont fork, although I dont think the verve is over blessed with nutrients !
