Wild flower garden cheat.
« on: October 18, 2020, 11:22 »
OH wants a wild flower garden in our little orchard plot where the grass will be left un-mown (see attached pic) however I know they like poor soil to succeed so I'm going to cheat. I'll give it a good cut before winter, a treatment of weed-killer to eliminate the dandelions, then I'll plant a few crocuses for spring colour. As for the rest, I'm going to get some seeds of escholzia, Flanders poppies, cornflowers, cosmos, Nigella etc which I will grow in my greenhouse then plant out into pockets of soil. I'd also like some type of white daisies and a yellow plant that will grow between one and two feet high and would appreciate any suggestions for these plus your thoughts on my plan.

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hubby wants a wildflower meadow, but you're going to kill the dandelions first
Sorry but it did make me laugh out loud ;)

It's Yellow Rattle that you need to sow/plant, to weaken the grass, which allows the other flowers to flourish.

MOS, I know what you mean and I did wonder about keeping them, so maybe I will. I don't want to weaken the grass because the fruit trees will need nutrients which is why I've chosen another way to try and get what he wants.

You may well find that the grass is actually competing with the trees for those nutrients.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
