Rhubarb Seeds...advice needed
« on: June 21, 2011, 21:14 »
Hi all

My allotment neighbour has 2 flowering rhubarbs and he has pulled the flower stalk out of them and dumped them on his compost heap.

I noticed th seed pods - thousands of them, and they seem dried out.

I want to plant them, can someone please tell me when, how and if it's worth it etc.

Cheers

R

I bought my rhubarb seed and grew it. That worked, so no reason your's shouldn't.
Sow now and you should be able to pot them on to overwinter somewhere a bit sheltered and plant next spring :)

I grew ours from seed. Really rewarding now it's producing but gotta be patient. I just sowed as per normal. Thinned to one per pot. Potted on into big tub and kept at side of house over winter. Planted out whole tubs into ground around February time. Left that year and harvested lightly second year. Now fully established.
