Amilo, I have the same soil and you get better results by keeping it mulched. The soil stays soft and you can more easily weed or cultivate and then replace any missing mulch.

Or, wait until after a rain to weed and cultivate.

Some time ago Ann, there was some enforced interest in 'The Three-height Growster Weeding Platform', on which I could sit at various jobs, and clout weeds (Couch back then), etc!

Of course, I was bullied into providing a photograph of the thing, which was actually just an old woofer speaker with the insides taken out...

Still, we all felt better for a chuckle - well I did...;0)

I use a beer crate to perch on when hand-weeding onions, any future beds are going in with 18" paths to make sure that a full-size crate will fit! (I have a couple of crates that split in half and are handy for narrow paths).

Got it in one Alastair!

18" paths are our new world, but not next year!

So pleased that you see the system we're trying to do too!

That looks like a great bit of kit Pail, the accuracy must be much improved on an ordinary onion hoe!

Might try and make one...!

It is a great tool.. not seen another like it and guess it was hand-made. The photo doesn't show the slightly curved blade particularly well. It is great for weeding close-up and gives me a bit of extra reach as it's about a foot long.

Originally bought to get close in when keeping the onions weed-free but I hardly ever "hand-weed" without it.... speeds the job up no end.  :)
