hens pecking bottoms
« on: October 05, 2009, 22:41 »
Hi its me again, im sure you will all be fed up with me by now, but i thorght i was now on top of the problem, but i have just been through a week of my hens pecking at each others bottoms, i think it could be one hen causing the problem, i think that she lays in wait for a hen to lay an egg, she then starts pecking at her bottom, then the rest join in, i have already lost a hen to this game, each day im having to seperate a hen for 24 hours then reintroduce her, then we start all over again with another hen, i am now thinking of trying to take away the hen who i think is the ring leader to see if the problem improves, but i have read somewhere that you shouldnt do this, could someone advise me i dont want to do the wrong thing, i have had a very stressfull week sitting in the hen house trying to keep them in order, TC

try removing the pecker, not the pecked.

stockholm tar was the onlything that worked for me, tried the sprays etc, and did not want to use a beak ring, messy, but effective.

May I suggest you make something like this but a bit bigger for your pecker.

http://www.thehuntinglife.com/html/sections/articles/competitions/building-rabbit-trap.html

I know its a rabbit trap but it is a quick and simple to make and convert.

Hi Roughly i have got a pen its bigger and has sleeping area, water proff 5* rateing, she is in it at this moment, shes not happy about it, so if we find out its her causing the trouble, we will have to consider building another run along side the others, as this at the moment isnt really big enough for perment living i will try and get a photo
