Title: EGG BOUND
Post by: barley on January 06, 2014, 16:32
advice needed please

I think one of my bantam hens is egg bound

she has been straining all day and feels solid in the abdomen

I had an exploratory investigate with a bit of petroleum jelly and finger  and I can feel a smallish softish egg shaped blob

I tried to push it out but scared it might break , how do I go about helping her , never had to do this before ewww

try warm water, but go carefully as they do not like to be shocked. Keep her indoors to monitor her.

You're right not to try to push it out. it is very dangerous if the egg breaks inside them. A warm bath can help but you will need to dry her well this weather using a hair dryer. They usually enjoy all this :)

good news its out  :D

boy what a whopper  no wonder the poor mite couldn't push it out

I put petroleum jelly round and just inside her vent and put her in the nest box last night to sleep

she seems ok again today

thanks

congrats
you will need to check her daily, poss twice daily, for a few weeks just to make sure she does not prolapse. If she does you will need the petrolum again to gently push a prolapse in.
