Can't wait, I've got chillis and cauliflowers germinating in the propagator, broad beans in the polytunnel, and got my free Vale Emeralds in the post yeterday, but not starting the chitting for another couple of weeks.  Been diarising everything this weekend, roll on the spring too!

Hi fatbelly, i have Charlotte, Anya and Nadine all chitting.  Will get Cara and Lady Balfour going in about 3 weeks or so, they have not broken dormancy yet so leaving in the dark covered to keep frost out.  I don't think it is too early and in fact the Charlotte and Anya were already starting so when that happens there is no point keeping them in the dark.  Saw some in the Range the other day for sale and they had started to chit too.  Just keep em frost free but cold ie not inside.

Woudn't have thought so. There are various potato days around the country from this weekend onwards, so all the buyers will presumably start chitting as soon as they get home...

Pink Fir Apples are a b****r to stand up in egg boxes aren't they?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Got some Dunluce under the kitchen table. Might do the rest in my greenhouse.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

My spud & onion order hasn't arrived yet, but I'm in no hurry at the moment as it hasn't stopped raining    Things will always catch up if I'm a bit late though  :D

Got my earlies and second earlies chitting - don't know if I will bother chitting the maincrops
a) because I have run out of room
b) I've got nothing to stand them in
and
c) I've heard you don't need to.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
It is good to know that I am not too early.

As regards Spring arriving it has been raining every single day here in Cheshire for the last 14 days, not one day without rain.

In truth we are all far too early it is still January and the depths of winter. Its just that I like you good people want to get stuff in the ground and start growing. I am normally a very patient person but since my seeds have arrived and I bought my Onions sets and seed spuds I just can't wait to get going.

Despite my eagerness I have decided to err on the side of caution and won't be putting my Onions sets or seed spuds in the ground until late March. I figure nature will catch up the odd week or two but it can't do its stuff if the seeds and sets have rotted because they were put in to early in cold and wet ground.

I have only seen two types of seed potatoes here in Hungary [1 x red and 1 x white] names unkown but are probaly unpronounceable anyway :?
Don't seem to do earlies but when spring comes it comes with a  vengence.  Crop last year was my first attempt here and reasonable.
btw, my purple sprouting......erm... still hasn't.
Snow has gone, lake is losing it's ice and sunny daytime temp last three days around 10 degs.
