garlic may or may not show before the New Year. Much the same timing as daffodils, really
-
oh ok, i was hoping it woul be a bit sooner, can i pit a inch or so of manure over the top as a mulch? just thinking if its going to be that long it may help with weeks etc

Yes, I apply a 2-3" mulch of well rotted manure.
As I've mentioned in other posts, you can also oversow with fenugreek but it might be a tad late for that now.
-
thats great thanks,
i couldnt see any harm in it but wanted to check as ive already dug some in
will just stick with the manure for now i think

Naaaawww ??? Green shoots from a planting 2 weeks ago? Can you post a piccie please.
Did you have heavy rain last night? Maybe the soil has sunk.
Garlic is very frost-hardy (otherwise we wouldn't plant it in October).

im as shocked as you, they where not there yesterday!
i will pop out now and get a pic, i even dug one up to make sure i hadnt got my planting planner wrong and they where onions or something, but no its garlic

Well b*gger me! Apart from growing horizontally, these look great
Good thing is that you'll be able to see the rows & hoe off any late season weeds.
How deep did you plant 'em BTW?
-
Same here - I planted mine three weeks ago - in the wrong place, dug them up a week later and put them in the right place - and they are now three inches high!!
-
2" possibly a bit more, the tops of the cloves where covered about 1/2 inch as a guess
seams like ages ago i set them
im still going to mulch them when i can get to the farm to get some more manure go that will give them a but more depth if i havent planted them deep enough

No sign of my garic yet, but at least I know what to look for.
The broad beans I stuck in about 10 days ago are just poking through though.

It will be too awkward to mulch now - you will cause too much damage to the shoots. Don't worry about planting depth; the clove you planted rots away & a new bulb will form at the correct depth.
For the record, I'd be planting porcelain garlic at about the same depth, maybe a little deeper & then adding a 2" manure mulch.

Mother Nature seems to have gone a bit mental. I've got a datura with seven flowers threatening to come out.
I blame all those satellites they keep sending into space.
It's not natural.
My garlic's just come from Dobies so I'll plant soon.

Mine's stuck in the post somewhere Whhaaaa!!!!!!!
-
just been to do some leaf clearing,
the garlic has come on great the last few days, i have 3 complete rows and one row thats only got 2 shooting. that one was the last one i set with all the smaller cloves in!
i think if they dont show within the next week or two i will dig the cloves out and sow another row of broad beans
talking of witch over half of them have shooted now too.
only one shallot has sprouted but that has happened since i was up there yesterday.
should i put some slug pellets round the broad beans to be on the safe side?
thanks

omg shallots i wished i planted shallots, they are the buisness for making sauces. I've run out of room on the plot, agggh  how far apart are shallots planted???
-
ive done mine 6" apart and a foot apart for the rows.
planting in a bed set up plant 7" apart each way
i dont have all that much room so i dont plant much of anything, but what i do is plant little of alot.
i think depending on my buisnesses if all gos ok i will get a allotment next year but if i end up working for someone again full time i just wont have spare time to do it

Mine are up too, I put mine in at about 2" as well. Last year I put them in at the recommended 4", but an awful lot didnt do too well.
Ive also planted them on ridges hoping the drainage will be better, though my soil is very good. I shall find out next year which works better, I should have done some of each really......but didnt think

All those already growing garlic! Will they bolt next year?
I get me coat....
-
i would!
