Poorly hen urgent advice needed please
« on: August 04, 2010, 07:52 »
I have a two year old hen off her feet this morning. Her comb is chilly and a bit blue at the back end. Her crop is puffy and a bit squishy. Help please.
3 o'clock is both too early and too late to start anything - Sartre said so.

hello, sorry your hen is unwell.
The squishy crop could be sour crop - if you open her beak does her breath smell?
If so take a look at this link:-

However the cold and blue tinged crop suggests either - a circulatory problem such as a heart problem or lung problem, or a vitamin deficiency.

Personally I would take her to a vets to get her checked out as soon as possible.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Oh no, so sorry Jane, sounds like it probably was her heart then and doubt that there was anything you could have done, however just to be sure keep an eye on all of your other chickens. Hugs from me xx

Oh no. How distressing for you Jane. As Joyfull said, it does sound like her heart. Ive had a couple of hens just "go" like that.
RIP little hen, and a big hug to you Jane. Its such a shock isnt it?!

Mary.
