do chickens need grass. i know it might sound a bit daft but can they live without it. my garden is all concrete and flags would it be ok to keep chickens on this?

I don't have chickens but from what I understand they can be kept without it (after all battery or barn hens never see any). What the need is somewhere to dustbath and something to scratch about in and fresh greens to peck at and keep them happy and occupied.

Sure someone far more experienced and expert will be along to hepl any minute.

Welcome aboard.

Kate's pretty much summed it up as far as the grass goes. Ours can see it on the other side of their run, but they certainly don't have any under their feet.

You'll need to give them a fairly deep litter of softwood bark chippings or straw or something else suitable for outdoors, free draining and suitable for scratchign in.
