Broad Bean Frame
« on: March 22, 2012, 13:55 »
I want to sow “Jade” broad bean seeds directly into the allotment this weekend. As they grow quite tall I will have to put in some sort of frame for them to climb up. Will the same style of frame used for runner beans be OK?

Broad beans won't climb, whatever you come up with, you'll have to tie them to it.

You can try a few posts with a horizontal cane and tie them in when it reaches that.

Marshall's Seed describe them as "stocky" are you sure they're tall?

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I put a row of stakes about 6 ft apart alomg each side of the row and join them with bean string at various heights.

I was originally going to buy “The Sutton Seeds” broad beans from the Marshalls Seeds catalogue. They are described as growing 15-18 inches tall. I just assumed that as no climbing height was given for the “Jade” variety they would be tall.

It appears that they are exclusive to Marshall's, as you say no height is given, but "stocky" to my mind means "not tall"!

Thanks Auntie and DD. What is a good bean to grow with respect to a good crop?
