Christmas potatos
« on: July 09, 2009, 14:18 »
:) I've just spent an enjoyable halfhour planting some Carlingford? potatos in 2 sacks and a very large container. I've covered them with about 4 inches of compost and watered them in. At the moment they're on the patio, do I need to do anything else to them and what sort of looking after do they need?  Just had some delicious skinned broadbeans and feta cheese tossed in oil and mint for lunch, and now I'm off to turn the compost heap which is becoming a compost mountain!  :D
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

Try Tuckers, they have 3 or 4 varieties in...but pricey....

I have just got some Carlingford that arrived today, I had planned to plant them on the allotment but all the advice seems to be to plant them in containers/sacks etc.  Has anyone grown these successfully in the ground or am I wasting my time.  We have just taken our plot on and there is all this soil just waiting to have something put in, so thought I would chance it.

If you are growing in containers I would plant one potato per 15litres of compost, so for most containers you can use 2/3 potatoes.
They will grow in your garden and if you can put some protection over them if frost is forecast then that would help them.
Plant them a good 8" deep so that the tubers are nice and safe in the soil if the winter is hard.
We once had a field that we couldn't harvest and we went back in March of the next year and salvaged some very nice spuds.

Perhaps a friendly Mod could merge all the recent Christmas potato threads, if they've the time, I'm sure it would help us all.  :)

Nice thought, but the problem with doing that is that it puts the posts into time order and the thread can look very disjointed, especially when there are several.

There's nothing to stop any member posting a link to another current thread if they think it relevant and helpful.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I saved some of my Charlottes about 4 weeks ago and put them in the fridge wrapped in paper tissue. I'll plant them in August in a large sack of rotted horse muck so that I can move it to the greenhouse when the weather turns. Got the idea from an earlier thread on this forum. Hopefully I'll have new potatoes for Christmas dinner!! (First go at this - fingers crossed!)  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!
