Cutting down broad beans.
« on: July 03, 2013, 11:12 »
I harvested quite a lot of my BB's yesterday and I'm quite happy with the results. There are still some left to pick as well.

Now the question: The plants are quite tall. No beans have formed on the top third of the plant. Is it good practice to take this unproductive top off the plant, or is there still a chance it may produce something. There are no flowers, or ever have been to the best of my knowledge. The growing tips were removed a while ago.

They won't produce any more.

You can clear them away to the compost heap once you've finished harvesting or they will just begin to get mildew/rust/chocolate spot and be a source of infection for other plants.

The ones I harvested were from the bottom of the plants. The ones that are left are in the middle third of the plants. Is it still ok to get shut of the tops?

It's common practise to pinch out the top parts to stop black fly - so shouldn't be aproblem

I would leave the rest of the plant (minus the tips if they have black fly) as the beans need to get sustenance from them.
