Poinsettia - Anyone tried growing this?
« on: December 02, 2013, 11:28 »
Morning All,

Mrs Jim bought some Poinsettia plants from M&S at the weekend and they are lovely.

Is it possible to grow them here in the UK and has anyone tried?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

They are lovely but not easy to keep going. They need a certain amount of uninterrupted darkness, plus other things so best to giggle them for more info.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

They will not survive outside if that is your question!

Inside, in the warm and out of drafts, with a gentle weekly water, they should last for months  :D

They are grown just down the road from me,all for sale. You can keep them going but they are never as big & lush as when you buy them, the red leaves are bracts not flowers as many believe, the tiny yellow flowers appear later after Christmas. As Goosegirl says they have to have darkness for around 14 hours for so many weeks to get them to turn red & is a real faff,I kept forgetting to take them out of the cupboard
