poinsettia dying?
« on: December 22, 2012, 15:03 »
Hi there
My wife was given a poinsettia a couple of weeks ago and all its done since then is drop leaves. It looks really sorry for itself now.
We have not been over or under watering it and I am at a loss as to what I can do to help it.
Any ideas?

It could possibly be shock. It will have gone from ideal growing conditions, to travelling in wagons in all temperatures, maybe stored in a supermarket warehouse for a couple of days before being bought and put in a house with central heating. If you can keep t in a place where the temperature will be fairly constant, and don't over water it might pick up, but someone else might know better. (I admit I have never had one!) ;)

Sounds like shock to me - I'd be tempted to shock it even more with a trip to the compost heap!    Unlikely to ever regain its looks  - the lower branches'll not bud up sadly.

Mine was exactly the same, it was in a very small pot so I have potted it on and kept it on the kitchen table in the light but no draft and it seems to be responding

Sorry to say, that some stores sell these plants like baked beans, and have no understanding of nature...

I reckon you could take the thing, re-pot it in nice compost if available, and try and nurture it to maturity!

They're stunning plants when allowed to get going, but the price at point-of-sale just means that they're no more than a bunch of motorway garage flowers...

Sad Growster comment - not meant to upset...:0(

They are very susceptible to draughts, that makes them shed leaves & they never return to their former glory, garden centre near here even fasten tissue over the top of the plastic sleeve they are in to protect them on the way home.
