Nail-less hen
« on: May 13, 2010, 17:47 »
I recently bought a gold laced orpington and have noticed that she is slightly limping  :(
I checked her over and she hasn't any mites or anything like that, but when I had a closer look, I saw that one of her toe nails is missing!!
It's just a toe with no nail. Will it grow back?
What do you think caused it to fall off? Or maybe she hatched without it?
She seems a healthy and very happy bird, but with a missing toe nail which imbalances her  ???

Any suggestions will be appreciated  :)
All lives are precious.

I have a sablepoot with some nails missing and an araucana with an extra nail (just the nail no extra toe) on both of her feet, both were born like it  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

no it makes no difference to mine, if yours are limping then this suggests a problem.

Have you got wire under the base of your pen for rodent prevention....... Maybe she has been scratching around and just got it caught :(  Or scrabbling around on the side mesh of the pen...

I have a white star that everytime she sees me.... will make a mad dash for the nearest part of the pen to me and throw herself against it in a wall of death style attempt to reach me!!!  Ahhhh!!!

It will no doubt grow back, but maybe not as neat as before :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

Thanks Chookiechook.
Yes, all our three cages have chicken wire a few feet under the ground.
She already had the nail missing when we bought her, so maybe something happened to her in the cage she was kept in or maybe she hatched like it.

Thank you for all the help, I'm not too concerned because she wanders around the garden so happily  :)
