Garlic
« on: January 11, 2010, 17:27 »
Hi
A newbie here.
Bought some cheap garlic bulbs in Focus DIY.
Sprouting already, cannot get them in the ground.
Will they be OK in little pots, kept outdoors till the ground thaws out?

Thanks

They'll be fine.
Put them out v early spring.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Keep in a cool dark place, plant out when the ground has thawed out.

They will be ok.

While i'm here, anyone know the best to grow for storing?

Our crop from last year has all gone soft.

Hi Jilly
I grew some softneck ones last year called Sultop and they say they don't keep as long as hardneck varities. However I have still got loads left and they are as hard as concrete (hope their not just frozen). I have been using them since August and they have a nice mild flavour. Although I have planted a new variety in Autumn (Germidour) I will definately plant some more saved Sultop cloves in spring.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that, I bought some onion sets that were starting to sprout as well.
would the same advice apply to them?
Also bought some redcurrant and blackcurrant canes, they were selling them off at 10p each!!
Thanks

The ones we had where Thermidour, maybe a cousin of Germidour?

Yep same with the onions, as for your canes that's a good buy.
