Tonne Bag composter
« on: March 14, 2007, 10:58 »
While surfing the NET, found the idea of using a tonne bag to make compost in - will also be great to grow cucumbers on top once it's full.
BUT wonder if I should make a hole in the bottom for the worms to get in. Any advice?  Also, carried home our very first produce today - three teeny sticks of rhubarb I've been forcing under a bucket. So that's pud sorted for today!   Jean
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

There was a similar thread on this recently, Jean.  I'll see if I find it for you.  Composting worms will come in over the top when they are good and ready.   They do not live in the soil.

I tried this and the bag broke down and I was left with a real mess.

Use a UV-stable bag.

  No they don't usually give you a choice!   Mostly they do use UV-stable but yours might have been a one-trip job.  I'll bet the bottom of the bag was fresh even after the sides fell apart?

Hi Aidy

How long was it before it broke down

they should be ready to empty after a year of being filled and i would assume it take a lot longer for em to break down.

cheers

I,ve just aquired a couple of tonne bags, which i,m hoping to make compost in.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

These bags are to be found everywhere. They are mostly nonreturnable. So most people will be delighted if you want to take them away. When you see a delivery in progess or spot a bag on someones drive way, ask if you can have it. Then use two or even three bags inside on another to grow or compost in.If the outer one deteriorates peel it like an onion. most will free drain being woven materia. This way they will last for years, cost you nothing and you are also recycling,at least for a little while. Come the day you havbe to depose of them they are great under lottie sheds as insulation.Cut up into panals they can make windshields tacked between two stakes. you can also use them to warm up your soil
