last Summer's raspberries
« on: November 24, 2013, 21:01 »
Having just inherited many raspberry bushes, on my new lotty. When should these be cut back, and secondly how far from the ground. I take it they are Summer Rasps as the bushes are now empty.

Prune out the old canes that have fruited this year - they'll be brown -  cutting them off low down, just a couple of inches above the ground. Leave the new canes, which are green, they'll fruit next year.

If they're Autumn fruiting you may have to chop all of them down as they won't grow fruiting stems until the spring, so don't worry if that's what you are doing.

Next year make a note of when they fruit, so you know which type you have ;)
