Planting leggy brassicas
« on: July 27, 2019, 15:24 »
My own seedlings have done very badly this year, so I bought in some spring cabbage, sprouts, Romanesco and PSB. They were bought as bundles of 20 and bare rooted. They arrived very quickly looked healthy but they are all leggy. The bare stems are all 6" to 9", because they were field grown  At the moment they are planted out in large plots so that the roots can develop , and seem to be ok.
Can I plant these say 6" deep?  What is the chance of these cropping?  Anyone else had experience of these types of plants. Thank you.

In my experience brassicas do best when planted deeply and firmly so I think they’ll be fine. The PSB plants may not get as big as usual as it’s a bit later in the year for planting them out but they should still crop in Spring.

Ditto that.  Plant deeply.  They will be fine.

Thank you both for your replies. I normally develop my seedlings in pots before planting out, and then 'deeply' is about 2" to the lower leaves. These plants are like miniature palm trees, but they are all I've got this year.

Like you my PSB seedlings didn't do well so I resorted to buying some plug plants. When they arrived they were enormous and completely root bound in their tiny plugs. I didn't hold out much hope for them but potted them out to let the roots develop. They are now in my vacated potato bags and looking enormously happy and healthy  :D

I didn't plant them deeply, just to the level of the soil but I staked them solidly.
