Anyone know their onions?
« on: May 26, 2009, 22:09 »
Just saying hello, heard about this site from another allotmenteer on Ardsallotments.  I planted Japanese onions last november and they have been growing well but now the 'necks' seem really thick, some of the leaves have yellowish spots and holes and the bulbs are squishy!  does anyone know what this could be?

Do they smell badly?
Cheese makes everything better.

HI nurse thimble,  welcome to the forums :)

I could be wrong (others will be along soon to put me right) but it sounds like they are possibly rotting, but the thick necks would seem as if they are bolting so not sure really.

Have you had a particularly dry spell where you are?  this could cause bolting.

I'm not an expert by any means on onions, - is november a bit late for planting perhaps?  Again, I don't know for certain; others will though

welcome to the site

Welcome to the site nurse thimble  :D

Don't know but I'll pop you over to Grow Your Own where even more onion growers lurk!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

they don't smell, I pulled one, we ate it fried, tasted great and we're still alive!  not sure wether to leave them in the ground? or cut my losses and pull them?

Hi nurse thimble

Japanese onions will not keep so start eating them asap, they are delicious in salads as they are not too strong
Always look ahead, there are no regrets in that direction
