This might sound like a silly question but is it safe to put slug pellets down around cabbages etc? we have a big problem with them and doesnt say anything on the back of the jar?

Yes  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Safe for cabbages -yes

Safe for birds and hedgehogs ? no-  They can be poisoned by eating slugs killed by slug pellets
Even dogs can be poisoned by slug pellets despite the added 'Bittrex'

There are safer alternatives

There are 'organic' slug & snail pellets available which do no harm to widlife, dogs, cats, etc. In my experience, highly effective on slugs & snails.

I use the organic ones and put them into pots and sink them into the ground or use lager and it seems to be working  ;)

A very selective and effective way is to go "Lamping" with a pair of scissors. The birds and other slugs will clear up the remains.
