When will bell peppers ripen?
« on: August 22, 2019, 07:58 »
Hi all,

I have quite a few green bell peppers growing that have been the same size and colour since June. As they haven't turned red I'm wondering if they ever will. DOes anyone have any experience of this and if there is anything that can be done? Thanks!

Easy answer when they are ready.

Peppers are daylight neutral plants, by this they have a set time scale from growing to fruiting/ ripening etc and are not bothered by an increase or decrease in light levels as in some other plants, generally I find sweet peppers take a little longer than hot peppers to go into ripening stages.
I am growing Trinidad Perfume as my sweet pepper and they are now just starting to change where as many of my hot peppers I have been munching on for a few weeks now.

As Aidy says, mine have been green for a long time, but in the last week have started ripening. I grow Romano type peppers from saved seed, and find these work best for me. Have faith! I'm sure yours will start ripening soon.

I am growing Trinidad Perfume as my sweet pepper

I had a germination failure on these this year  :(  Have you eaten them before Aidy?  I tried them on pizza as suggested on the packet, but thought they got a little lost.  Lightly coated with oil and roasted to go with chicken or fish, they were a big hit here   :)

My sweet peppers are only just turning red as well.  The plants are loaded with fruit, but it has stayed green for ages.  Hang in there Chris.  It will happen eventually    ;)

Indeed New Shoot I have grown them for the last couple of years. I just chuck them in salads and eat raw/ whole, love the Habernero flavour without the heat.
Last years was a germination issue but managed to get enough going, this year no problems at all.
