Moving / splitting comfrey
« on: June 17, 2009, 09:06 »
I have a large comfrey plant at home (approx 2m high) and I am thinking about maybe splitting it and then moving it to the allotment.

Can anyone advise whats best and when is the best time to do it ?

Thanks!

just chop it up , we chop ours into 6 inch lengths , bury into 3-4 inches then water in , then we cover lightly with 1/2 inch manure , itll be up and running in a week or so , good luck ,

The time that is recommended to replant is in the Spring!
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!

Recommended being the operative word - Id divide it now, pot them up and keep them damp until they have taken. If you wait until spring, you'll miss a decent cut next year.  You'll at least get 2 or 3 cuts if you do it this year. Id do as Peterjf suggests.

I divided 1 very sick plant and took 18 root cuttings. All 18 rooted and I've already taken a cutting (just a few leaves) off the 2 larger plants which I put in a better location.
