Need a strimmer - any recommendations?
« on: September 21, 2010, 14:31 »
Hi all

I need to pay my allotment edges some attention - up until now a very kind gent on the plots has been doing it for me, but I want to unburden him! I have just read some terrible reviews of some products and I don't want to waste my money - any one have any suggestions?

Last year I was also looking at power tools but eventually bought a lightweight generator from B&Q which is light enough for me to carry onto the site and take home. I can use this to run my electric hedge cutter, strimmer and mower. My electric cutter does a much better job than my neighbours petrol cutter. Your only problem might be the weight - I am pretty big - my wife would not cope with carting it around. One lady on our site has a set of pram wheels she uses to move her generator around on.

PS this post might well be shifted to the bit of the site to do with tools!

I use a Ryobi RLT30CFT petrol (2 stroke) strimmer it has an electric start and a choice of two strimming heads light duty and heavy duty.

Costs less than £130.00  easy to start and well balanced - I love it!!

We're thinking of getting one for our site - would that one be tough enough for shared use do you think?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Ryobi are fine tools for home use but i would not recommend one for the type of use you want Noshed. For  a few quid more you could get a proffesional tool.

I have had no problems so far with the Ryobi on my plot, had it for 2 years - the lady allotmenteers will love the electric start!!  I do not know of a professional model with electric start!! perhaps fatcat1955 can enlighten.

I bought a Viking electric one last year. Part of Stihl so German and robust. Very pleased with it.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

What would be a 'professional' one do you think?

I agreed with you that Ryobi were good tools, i have quite a few of their one + range as well as a petrol strimmer. Noshed is looking for a strimmer for use by a number of people and therfore a more robust machine would be suitable. Have a look at the Stihl range, they are the one's most of the pro,s use.
